Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Therapeutic Recreation Specialist to join our team at Rehab Without Walls Neuro Rehabilitation. As a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, you will play a critical role in helping individuals with brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, or strokes regain functional capabilities and independence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate recreation activities, functional leisure skills, and leisure education for individuals with complex neurologic injuries and orthopedic rehabilitation needs.
  • Assess the capabilities, interests, and barriers of individuals served and monitor progress, recommending changes and modifications to programs as required.
  • Consult with physicians and other members of the rehabilitation team regarding therapeutic recreation goals and program referrals.
  • Coordinate activities with staff and the rehabilitation team, participating in care planning meetings and communicating with community service organizations to develop resources for recreational programs.
  • Design community reintegration activities to assist individuals with their physical and cognitive needs during physical recreational and leisure activities.
  • Provide training to individuals served and, as appropriate, to others involved in their rehabilitation, analyzing and documenting the results of any training.
  • Perform thorough evaluations, assessing the needs of individuals served and setting measurable objectives in conjunction with the rehabilitation team, adjusting treatment to achieve maximum results.
  • Apply professional knowledge and skills in accordance with accepted standards of clinical practice, facilitating problem resolutions and achieving individualized goals and outcomes for individuals served.
  • Report progress to the rehabilitation staff, individuals served, and family members, observing, documenting, and reporting changes in the condition of individuals served to the Clinical Coordinator/designee, attending physician, and other treatment team members as appropriate.
  • Provide treatment progress and status documentation in accordance with the Plan of Treatment, participating in the team process, providing input, and effective treatment strategies, attending case conferences and family educational meetings.
  • Develop, teach, and assess the plan of treatment, guiding the Rehabilitation Specialist/Certified Nursing Assistant in fulfillment of the plan, using appropriate methods and tools in all teaching and training activities, including those associated with discharge.
  • Maintain the highest standards of professional conduct in relation to information that is confidential in nature, sharing information only when the recipient's right to access is clearly established and the sharing of such information is clearly in the best interest of the individual served.
  • Collect and document items necessary for the organization to complete a thorough and effective program evaluation and program improvement, attending, participating in, and/or conducting internal staff development programs, obtaining continuing education as required by Company policy and regulations, and maintaining and enhancing clinical practice skills.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in response to the individual served, office, and/or program needs.
Qualifications
  • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification is required.
  • The candidate must successfully complete any/all required pre-employment evaluation test(s) per policy in each assigned area of practice.
  • Good organizational and communication skills are needed.
  • Ability to function with minimum supervision.
  • Reliable transportation is required.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation Therapy or the equivalent plus a minimum of two years therapeutic therapy experience is required.
  • Knowledge of complex neurologic injury and orthopedic rehabilitation techniques generally required. Knowledge of therapeutic recreation program design and the ability to obtain National Therapeutic Recreation Specialist certification within one year of employment required. Maintain professional license and/or certification as required by the state in which the therapist practices. Effective communication skills also required.
