We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Firefighter to join our team at the City of Brenham, TX. As a Firefighter, you will be responsible for responding to emergency situations, operating and maintaining fire suppression vehicles and equipment, and participating in training and education programs.
Key Responsibilities- Respond to fire, hazardous materials, and technical rescue incidents, and other emergency requests;
- Lay and connect hose, hold nozzles and direct water streams, raise and climb ladders and use chemical extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines and other equipment at fire scenes;
- Perform fire suppression duties, enter blazing buildings, locate and extinguish fires, search for and rescue fire victims, perform salvage operations, raise and place ladders to preserve property, overhaul the fire scene for investigation;
- Assist in the maintenance and repair of fire department facilities, apparatus, and equipment, including reporting problems to command staff;
- Assist in performing fire prevention functions, including assisting with pre-fire planning, inspecting fire extinguishers, and speaking to schools and the general public about fire prevention;
- Operate, maintain, and instruct others in the use of specialized equipment such as self-contained breathing apparatus, power rescue equipment, air bags, gas detectors, heat detectors, generators, chain saws, and more;
- Operate and maintain radios and other communications equipment, including Computer Aided Dispatch equipment and incident reporting software;
- Participate in drills, demonstrations and courses in firefighting techniques, medical aid, heavy rescue, hazardous material, equipment maintenance and related areas;
- Perform tests of pumps, hoses, hydrants and other emergency equipment;
- Assist with department administrative duties, including preparing reports and maintaining files and statistical information;
- Conduct tours of station houses for scout, civic and other interested groups;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and volunteers, other agencies, and the general public.
- High school graduation or its equivalent;
- Basic firefighter certification from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) or SFFMA 1 & 2;
- Minimum of Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification;
- Valid Class B Texas driver's license within 6 months of hire;
- Ability to work irregular schedules and overtime on an as-needed basis;
- Ability to work in emergency situations where there is the possibility of danger or physical injury;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and volunteers, other agencies, and the general public.
The work environment is fast-paced and dynamic, with frequent exposure to emergency situations. The employee must be able to work in a team environment, remain calm and professional in tense situations, and present a positive attitude as a role model in the community.
