Position Overview
Under administrative guidance, the Fuels Crew Supervisor will plan, organize, coordinate, and oversee the Fuels Reduction Crew program. This role includes supervising Fuels Crew operations, developing and implementing training curricula, managing maintenance schedules for tools and equipment, and performing related duties as required.

Key Responsibilities:
The Fuels Crew Supervisor is a non-safety classification responsible for managing staff, operations, and administrative functions of the Fuels Crew Program. The Fuels Crew undertakes fuels management projects, often in challenging environmental conditions, while working with heavy equipment that carries inherent risks. These projects encompass fuel breaks, defensible space maintenance, roadside fuel reduction, community chipping, and potentially prescribed fire activities.

Department Overview
The County Fire Department is a dynamic public safety agency committed to serving the community with professionalism and dedication. Our mission encompasses a broad range of public safety initiatives, ensuring we are always prepared to respond to emergencies.

Ideal Candidate Profile:
The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, organized, and a reliable crew leader with strong situational awareness. They should possess some of the following qualifications:
  • Experience in supervisory roles, including planning, coordinating, hiring, training, and performance evaluation.
  • Physical endurance to conduct training for Fuels Crew members.
  • Knowledge of landscaping and forestry methods, along with experience using various tools and safe driving practices.
  • Experience in operating and maintaining mechanized forestry equipment for fuels management tasks.
  • Fleet management experience to ensure readiness of specialized equipment and vehicles.
Examples of Duties

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Plan, schedule, assign, and supervise Fuels Crew personnel and equipment for fuels management projects, ensuring crew safety.
  2. Inspect project areas, monitor fuel inventories, and assist with environmental assessments.
  3. Train, evaluate, and discipline subordinate employees; participate in the hiring process.
  4. Develop and maintain operating procedures and proficiency standards for the Fuels Crew.
  5. Build relationships with governmental agencies, local businesses, and community members to support fuels management projects.
  6. Ensure compliance with environmental measures in coordination with assigned staff.
  7. Manage logistics, travel, supplies, and equipment maintenance for the Fuels Crew.
  8. Supervise recovery efforts in response to natural disasters.
Employment Standards
  1. Four years of progressively responsible experience as a wildland fire/fuels crew leader, including supervisory and training experience.
  2. A combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to the above standard.
Additional Qualifications:
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License is required.

Knowledge and Abilities:
Understanding of fire hazard reduction methods, principles of vegetation management, and wildland fire behavior. Ability to direct and supervise personnel, effectively schedule work, and maintain productive relationships with various stakeholders.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Current Wildland Fire Qualification of Crew Boss (CRWB).
  • Previous supervisory experience with a Type 1 wildland fire suppression crew.
  • Certification as an Intermediate or Advanced Faller (FAL2 or FAL1).
