Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Teaching Assistant to join our team at Albemarle County Public Schools and Government. As a Teaching Assistant, you will provide administrative, clerical, and human support to classroom teachers, assisting with the management and instruction of students.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out instructional plans as designated by the classroom teacher and, if applicable, the student's Individual Educational Plan (IEP).
  • Develop and maintain a pleasant and orderly classroom environment, including maintaining instructional materials and designing bulletin boards.
  • Assist the teacher in maintaining appropriate classroom behavior and control, and carry out discipline as directed.
  • Procure, set up, and operate audio-visual equipment as needed.
  • Assist students with completing learning tasks assigned by classroom teachers.
  • Support the teacher in related instructional activities, such as field trips, library, and assembly.
  • Supervise students during lunch and free time periods, and assist with attendance recording and collection of lunch monies.
  • Perform clerical duties, such as typing, filing, and duplicating, as directed by the classroom teacher.
  • Assist with maintenance of students' records, and participate in team meetings.
  • Support students with medical needs, such as toileting, feeding, and positioning.
  • Assist with carry-over of related services, such as Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Speech.
Requirements
  • High school graduate or equivalent, with basic keyboard and filing training.
  • Ability to develop and maintain an empathetic attitude toward disabled students, and willingness to learn specialized instructional/management techniques.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with students, parents, and staff.
  • Willingness to seek and maintain CPR certification.
Working Conditions

Duties are performed in a school setting, with frequent walking, standing, and light lifting required. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary, and occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required.

Regular contact with other staff members, parents, and medical professionals is expected, and occasional attendance at parent conferences, building-level meetings, and division-wide meetings and training activities may be necessary.
