Job Summary

Norfolk Public Schools is seeking a skilled Painter II to join our facilities maintenance team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for performing a variety of skilled painting tasks, including preparing surfaces, applying coatings, and ensuring a high level of quality and safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Paint and finish a variety of surfaces on the interior and exterior of buildings, including walls, ceilings, doors, windows, and baseboards.
  • Lay out and paint lines on courts, playgrounds, athletic fields, and parking lots.
  • Use stencils to paint signs on blacktop and curbs.
  • Scrape, sand, putty, caulk, sandblast, and otherwise prepare surfaces for painting.
  • Apply stain and primer, intermediate and finished coats of shellac, varnish, and paint with brush, roller, or spray gun.
  • Mix and match paints, varnishes, lacquers, and enamels.
  • Remove damaged wooden window panes, clean frames and surfaces, select appropriate glass, cut glass to size, and use putty or other appropriate glazing compound to mount and fix glass in place for windows, doors, display cases, fire alarms, etc.
  • Use ladders, scaffolding, boatswain's chairs, and bucket trucks; protect surrounding areas or objects by taping or covering; move furniture and other objects and take down and replace blinds and electrical hardware to facilitate work.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of brushes, rollers, and other painting equipment, including minor repair of spray equipment.
  • Ensure safety inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Drive a vehicle to and from work locations and keep vehicle supplied with tools and materials; perform operator maintenance on vehicle and keep it in orderly condition.
  • Keep records and make reports of work accomplished by crew and materials used.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma preferred, supplemented by completion of appropriate apprenticeship maintenance painting and glazing training and considerable experience in the painting and glazing trades.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above-noted knowledge, skill, and ability.
