Key Position Details:

  • 0.5 FTE (40 hours per two week pay period)
  • Every other weekend

Job Responsibilities:

As a Medical Laboratory Technician, you will perform routine medical laboratory testing and be trained in one or more areas of the laboratory, including reception/registration, phlebotomy, specimen collection/processing, and analytical testing departments. You will be responsible for:

  • Performing routine and complex laboratory procedures, including waived, moderate, and highly complex analytical tests
  • Evaluating results for accuracy and resolving test problems
  • Recognizing, communicating, and documenting results that require action
  • Following all federal regulations, including CAP, OSHA, COLA, CLIA, and HIPAA
  • Performing and documenting required and advanced instrument maintenance, and quality control; taking appropriate remedial action

Customer Service and Patient Order Management:

  • Greeting patients, performing check-in process, and responding to patient needs
  • Evaluating patient orders for completeness and following up as needed
  • Managing patient orders to ensure adherence to regulatory and billing requirements
  • Performing scheduling, ordering, and releasing patient's orders in the electronic medical record

Collection and Processing of Specimens:

  • Reviewing orders and verifying patient identification
  • Instructing customers on collection procedures and protocols
  • Identifying and using appropriate collection method to obtain samples for testing (venipuncture or capillary puncture)
  • Collecting samples and labeling specimens
  • Evaluating acceptability of specimens
  • Performing processing of specimens

Administrative Duties:

  • Participating in departmental or system-wide meetings, projects, or committees as required
  • Performing various clerical duties

Education, Regulatory, and Safety:

  • Participating in the training of employees and students
  • Performing proficiency testing as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's or Vocational degree in a related laboratory field, including clinical rotations or equivalent routes as specified in CLIA '88

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Possessing or being eligible to receive appropriate HHS-approved laboratory certification (ASCP or AMT) required. If not certified, must obtain certification within 180 days
