The Team
At CZI, we develop open-source software tools and utilize artificial intelligence to expedite biomedicine. We provide funding for scientific research globally to push the boundaries of knowledge and have established a network of institutes to conduct research that cannot be performed in traditional settings.
Our Work in Science
CZI's scientific endeavors encompass grantmaking, software development, and collaboration with partner institutes within the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Network, which includes multiple Biohubs and the Chan Zuckerberg Imaging Institute.

The Opportunity
The AI/ML team is constructing one of the largest computing infrastructures dedicated to nonprofit life science research globally. This initiative will grant the scientific community access to predictive models of healthy and diseased cells, paving the way for groundbreaking discoveries that could transform disease management.
As a member of the AI/ML team, you will implement and refine cutting-edge models in artificial intelligence and machine learning to address significant challenges in biomedical sciences, aligning with CZI's mission.
Your Role
You will be expected to explore and expand the capabilities of generative AI tools for scientific exploration. Your responsibilities will include:
- Collaborating with research scientists to iterate, optimize, deploy, and maintain large-scale machine learning models and software tools for analyzing complex biological datasets.
- Building and maintaining AI agents for scientific applications.
- Working with cross-functional teams to enhance system performance and scalability to meet user demands.
- Training and evaluating multimodal foundation models using CZI's advanced GPU compute cluster.
- Handling diverse biological data types, including multi-omics data, imaging, and scientific literature.
- Ensuring reproducibility of data for research scientists through effective data management.
- Engaging with product teams to adapt models for various applications.
- Participating in open science initiatives to foster community interaction.
What You'll Bring
We seek individuals who thrive in a collaborative environment and possess:
- A proven history of developing AI/ML models for large-scale computing environments.
- Experience in deploying models for batch and real-time inference.
- Proficiency in Python-based ML libraries such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, and others.
- Familiarity with lower-level programming languages like Rust or C++ is a plus.
- A Master's or Ph.D. in computer science with a focus on machine learning or equivalent experience, along with 3-5 years in the field.
- Strong software engineering skills, including experience with version control and containerization technologies.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
