Position Overview:
The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Services is in search of a dedicated Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. This role is pivotal in providing therapeutic recreation services aimed at enhancing the quality of life for individuals with mental health challenges.

Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive functional assessments to evaluate clients' needs and strengths.
- Develop and implement individualized recreation therapy plans that promote recovery and personal growth.
- Facilitate group and one-on-one therapeutic recreation sessions tailored to adults aged 18 to 65 facing serious mental health issues, addiction, and trauma.
- Organize and lead recreational activities during weekdays, weekends, and holidays that foster hope and support clients' reintegration into the community.
- Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to monitor client progress and adjust treatment strategies as necessary.
- Maintain accurate documentation of client participation and progress in accordance with departmental policies.

Qualifications:
- A degree in Recreation Therapy from an accredited institution, including completed internships.
- Eligibility for National Therapeutic Recreation Specialist certification, leading to CTRS status within the first year of employment.
- A valid driver's license in Virginia.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant software applications.
- Knowledge of safety protocols and the ability to manage challenging behaviors effectively.

Preferred Experience:
- Previous work or internship experience with adults experiencing mental health challenges or disabilities.
- Familiarity with evaluating treatment interventions and assessing their effectiveness.
