Job Overview

Red Rock Fire is seeking a highly skilled Wildland Firefighter to join our team. As a Wildland Firefighter, you will play a critical role in controlling and suppressing fires in forests and vacant public land, as well as assisting with prescribed burning.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with prescribed burning and wildfire suppression.
  • Maintain fire equipment readiness.
  • Extinguish fires in collaboration with crew members.
  • Control and contain wildfires using various strategies.
  • Create a fire line by cutting down trees and clearing brush.
  • Collaborate with a team of firefighters to implement backfire or burnout operations.
  • Establish water supplies and direct water toward and onto fires.
  • Activate and control water and chemical hoses and/or pumps.
  • Use tools such as pulaskis or engine or hand-driven pumps to extinguish flames and embers.
  • Provide detailed information on the status of operations to fire dispatchers.
  • Search for and rescue victims of fire or other catastrophic events.
  • Patrol and oversee burned areas to identify and extinguish hotspots.
  • Review and analyze weather and topographical data to predict fire behavior or risk areas.
  • Operate vehicles and equipment used in fighting fires.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2) certification through the National Wildlife Coordinating Group preferred.
  • 1+ years of firefighting experience desirable.
  • Thorough understanding of relevant equipment, tools, policies, procedures, and strategies used in firefighting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and exercise good judgment during hazardous fire-suppression activities.
  • Ability to listen, understand, and respond quickly to directions.
  • Military experience desirable.
  • Works well with others, particularly in highly stressful situations.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check.

Physical Requirements:

  • Successful passage of physical exam and fitness test, based on an arduous fire position under the Interagency Wildfire Qualification Standards, required.
  • Highly dangerous work with the possibility of extremely prolonged periods working in high heat, high-stress situations.
  • Must possess the ability to perform high-intensity physical labor.
  • Prolonged periods of time standing and walking.
  • Must be able to lift at least 150 pounds at a time.
  • May need to be on shift for days at a time with very little rest.
  • Exposure to fire and smoke, and dangerous chemicals and poisonous gases.
  • Must be able to be on-call and travel to work in other locations, in various states, for prolonged periods of time.

Compensation:

Compensation is based on qualifications and experience, with a pay scale ranging from $17.00 to $22.00 per hour.

  • Overtime after 40 hours within a pay period.
  • Travel time will be compensated.
  • Food and lodging will be provided for operations out of town or for overnights.
