Job Summary

A WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is a vital support person who provides essential breastfeeding information and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provides breastfeeding promotion, support, and information to WIC clients through telephone or direct contact in WIC clinics.
  • Offers pregnant and breastfeeding advice and anticipatory guidance on normal breastfeeding practices.
  • Builds a caseload of WIC clients and makes routine periodic contacts throughout their breastfeeding experience.
  • Identifies complex breastfeeding issues or problems and refers them to the Breastfeeding Coordinator or alternate breastfeeding specialty or health care provider.
  • Is available outside regular working hours to assist WIC breastfeeding mothers with breastfeeding problems.
  • Teaches assembly, use, and cleaning of breast pumps and expression and storage of human milk.
  • Identifies the need for referrals to other local community resources.
  • Keeps accurate documentation of contacts with mothers and reports activities to the Breastfeeding Coordinator.
  • Respects client confidentiality and maintains a professional demeanor.
  • Attends staff meetings and required breastfeeding conferences/training, including trainings/observations with the regional Lactation Consultation.
Requirements
  • High school graduate or GED required.
  • Experience with WIC and breastfeeding support.
  • Good communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Fluency in the language of the majority of clients served.
  • Membership in the community served.
Michigan WIC Policy Requirements
  • Have breastfed at least one baby for a minimum of six months.
  • Be enthusiastic about breastfeeding and have a desire to help other clients.
  • Be familiar with WIC and current or previous WIC client experience preferred.
  • Have good communication and organizational skills.
  • Be fluent in the language of the majority of clients served.
  • Be a member of the community served.
