Current Opening: Scientist in Microbiology
Key ResponsibilitiesThe role involves conducting testing and project work within a cGMP laboratory environment:
- Perform routine microbiological testing in accordance with cGMPs, work instructions, SOPs, and applicable standards.
- Lead and assist in complex projects pertaining to:
- Microbiological testing (e.g., sterility, bioburden, environmental monitoring, water)
- Cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization of reusable medical devices
- Facility cleaning and disinfection efficacy studies
- Instrument and equipment IOQ/PQ
- Document findings and analyze data utilizing basic statistical methods.
- Identify and investigate non-conforming products in compliance with cGMPs.
- Prepare, review, and approve GMP and GLP protocols and reports.
- Review and validate data produced by other operational staff.
- Develop and validate innovative methods.
- Oversee or guide assigned technicians on a project basis.
- May directly supervise one or more employees, including responsibilities for interviewing, training, directing work, and evaluating performance.
- Create and document work instructions and SOPs.
- Provide solutions to encountered challenges.
- Initiate and implement preventative and corrective actions.
- Manage requisition and approval of raw materials and supplies.
- Execute tasks assigned by management with appropriate oversight.
- Assess equipment and resource needs.
- Maintain laboratory operations, including equipment maintenance and calibration.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by management.
To excel in this position, candidates must successfully perform each essential duty. The following qualifications are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required:
Education and ExperienceA Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) in a scientific discipline, with three to five years of relevant cGMP laboratory testing experience. Proficiency in reading, understanding, and operating laboratory equipment is essential, along with skills in laboratory techniques.
Preferred experience includes:
- Studies on cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization of medical devices.
- GMP sterility testing for pharmaceuticals and medical devices.
- Rapid sterility testing methodologies.
- cGMP testing of raw materials, finished products, and stability for pharmaceuticals.
- Development and execution of complex microbiological studies.
- Steam and ethanol sterilization processes.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and specialized laboratory software.
Communication SkillsAbility to read, analyze, and interpret technical documents. Proficient in writing reports, correspondence, and procedures. Capable of effectively presenting information and responding to inquiries.
Mathematical SkillsAbility to perform calculations involving proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume, along with applying basic algebra, geometry, and statistics.
Other Skills and AbilitiesAbility to apply common sense to follow written, verbal, or diagrammatic instructions. Competence in managing problems with multiple concrete variables in standardized situations. Strong organizational skills to schedule tasks and manage time effectively.
Physical DemandsThe physical demands outlined here are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this role. Regular activities include standing, sitting, walking, manipulating objects or controls, reaching, talking, and hearing.
Frequent lifting and/or moving of up to 30 pounds, with occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close, color, and peripheral vision, along with the ability to adjust focus.
