Job Summary

The Agronomy Research Assistant will support the agronomy efforts of the Hawaii Research Center, focusing on agronomic activities necessary to produce high-quality seed. This role will involve tasks in the Agronomy Department, including work with crop protection, land planning, and Integrated Pest Management (IPM).



Key Responsibilities



  1. Operate spraying equipment (Hagie and Millers) while ensuring proper use of PPE and following label directions.

  2. Assist with data entry in Agronomy Databases.

  3. Help with printing and posting WPS records.

  4. Support IPM chemical inventory management and tracking.

  5. Maintain all equipment in proper and safe working condition.

  6. Ensure chemicals are applied according to chemical labels.

  7. Maintain chemical inventory and keep the pesticide storage room organized.

  8. Communicate with supervisors about spraying activities.

  9. Assist with deploying new equipment for IPM.

  10. Provide input to supervisors and assist with short- and long-term planning.

  11. Perform miscellaneous tasks assigned by supervisors.

  12. Participate in personal development activities as part of a performance management and development plan.

  13. Support netting activities (operating equipment and on-the-ground work).

  14. Assist with developing protocols.

  15. Spray fence lines and fallow areas.

  16. Mow fallow areas.

  17. Crop scouting.

  18. Mini-disking between planting blocks.

  19. Track and enter data in databases for regulatory activities.

  20. Assist Regulatory and Compliance with field volunteering and monitoring.

  21. Operate equipment for field destruction, volunteering, and drip tape extraction.

  22. Assist with hand-pulling drip tape when needed.

  23. Install K lines and turn water on and off.

  24. Cover crop planting.

  25. Support pollinations during the busy season.



Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you'll need:





  • A minimum of a high school diploma or GED.

  • 2-4 years of tropical agriculture experience in IPM spray and farm equipment operation.

  • Proficiency in computer use, including Microsoft Office products.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • The ability to read and interpret instructions and carry out tasks with minimal supervision.

  • Work well under pressure to meet deadlines.

  • Tolerance and ability to work in an outdoor tropical agriculture setting.

  • Ability to communicate in English and work with others in a team setting and diverse cultural backgrounds and languages.

  • A valid driver's license, with a CDL preference or willingness to obtain.

  • Ability to tow trailers.

  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays during seasonal peaks and/or based on field needs.

  • Occasional lifting of 20-40 lbs.
