Job Overview

Position Title: Head Custodian

Position Summary: The Head Custodian is tasked with ensuring the overall cleanliness and upkeep of the facility and its surroundings, while also overseeing the safe operation of the school environment. This role includes the management of all equipment, furnishings, and grounds, and involves collaboration with the building supervisor regarding supplies, cleaning, maintenance, and other custodial responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Open the facility and ensure it is adequately heated and prepared for occupants by 7:00 a.m.

2. Manage the raising and lowering of the flag (weather permitting).

3. Monitor the functionality of HVAC systems.

4. Receive and verify all supplies for the facility, checking purchase orders against delivered items, and assist in storage as directed by the Principal.

5. Maintain walkways and entrances, ensuring they are free from debris, water, snow, and other hazards.

6. Replace lamps and fluorescent tubes as necessary.

7. Report any equipment malfunctions and damage to furniture to the Principal.

8. Prepare multi-purpose rooms or other areas for meetings as requested by the Principal.

9. Perform additional custodial duties as required to ensure the building is ready for occupancy, including weekends and evenings.

10. Solicit bids for construction and maintenance work from contractors, supervising and approving completed tasks.

11. Sanitize the pool as needed.

12. Oversee landscaping and grounds maintenance.

13. Accompany various inspectors through the facility and address inquiries regarding the premises.

14. Complete necessary training and obtain certifications as required (e.g., Pool Operator Certification, Pesticide Certification).

15. Be available on-call 24/7 for emergencies, responding to issues at the Special Education Center as needed.

16. Supervise custodial staff in their daily responsibilities.

17. Assist maintenance personnel as required.

18. Review custodial time sheets prior to submission to the office.

19. Communicate maintenance, repair, and updated schedules with the building Principal.

20. Aid the building Principal in developing a preliminary maintenance budget.

21. Maintain the Materials Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).

22. Order cleaning supplies and paper products as necessary.

23. Perform other assigned duties and comply with the Principal's requests within reasonable time frames.

Qualifications

1. High School Diploma/GED required; Associate's degree preferred.

2. Minimum of three years of progressive custodial experience in the physical operation and maintenance of educational facilities, grounds, and equipment.

3. Pool Operator Certification preferred; must obtain certification within six months of employment.

4. Allegheny County Certification and State Pesticide Test preferred; must obtain certification within one year of employment.

5. CPR/First Aid Certification preferred.

6. Training in Universal Precautions preferred.

7. Proficient in using office machines (copier, fax, telephone, etc.).

8. Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work under pressure.

9. Flexibility to perform additional tasks as assigned.

10. Basic computer skills, including email and software necessary for HVAC system management.

11. Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to inquiries from administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public.

Additional Requirements:

1. Current Act 114, Act 34, Act 151, and NSOR clearances are required prior to an offer (must be dated within one year of hire).

2. Completion of the School Personnel Health Record (Form H) must be received by Human Resources prior to the hire date.

Salary: AIUFT Salary Step 1 $30,
