Are you a transportation planning expert looking for a new challenge? We are seeking an experienced director to lead our team of policy and planning experts at the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) Central Transportation Planning Staff. Our team is dedicated to advancing the region's goal of a safe, reliable, equitable, and resilient transportation system.

About the Role:
  • We are seeking a talented individual with expertise in transportation planning and policy to lead our team in strategic development and implementation of climate resilience, air quality, performance-based planning, transportation equity, congestion management, and policy analysis programs.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree in urban studies, planning, public administration, political science, government, public policy, or a related field, plus at least five years of staff management experience; or a master's degree in the fields listed above and two years of staff management experience. The candidate should also possess strong organizational and time management skills, attention to detail, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and oversee staff focused on planning and policy research and analysis in support of the MPO and other project work at the agency.
  • Support and mentor staff in the ongoing development of programs, including developing multi-year visions and fostering cross-agency collaboration.
  • Collaborate with other groups in the agency, including the Communications and Engagement team; the technical teams responsible for carrying out multimodal transportation planning, modeling, and data analysis; and the MPO Activities team to jointly fulfill the MPO's responsibilities and federal requirements.
  • Coordinate internally to ensure the successful delivery of high-quality work products that comply with federal requirements, that are clear and engaging, and that provide meaningful resources for MPO board members, agency partners, and members of the public.
  • Work with agency leadership to respond to and partner with diverse stakeholders—including federal, state, regional, and local officials; other agencies; advocacy organizations; and the general public—and ensure that all are engaged in a fair, collaborative, and thorough manner.
  • Provide ongoing, timely support and feedback to team members, and deliver thoughtful evaluations.
  • Collaborate with the management and leadership team to provide input into agency operations and support implementation of the agency's strategic plan.

The Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) Central Transportation Planning Staff is a public agency made up of a passionate group of transportation planners, analysts, modelers, programmers, and engineers working to address the Boston region's transportation challenges. We offer a hybrid schedule, combining time in the office with remote work. Employees must reside within a commutable distance from our office in downtown Boston.
