Sports Medicine Assistant

Under the supervision of a department professional, the Sports Medicine Assistant performs general non-technical duties and assists with the care and treatment of athletes in various settings. This role requires a high school graduate with some experience in patient care and a working knowledge of medical terminology. The ideal candidate will be able to lift and transfer patients, maintain treatment areas, and perform upkeep on equipment and supplies. Additional responsibilities include preparing written documentation, maintaining appointment books, and providing general assistance to department professionals. The Sports Medicine Assistant will also be responsible for maintaining cleanliness of the department, treatment areas, and equipment, as well as performing clerical duties such as writing patient charges and answering telephones. This role requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to communicate effectively with hospital personnel.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with treatments including exercises, gait training, massage, whirlpool, hot packs, diathermy, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, ice packs, traction, wound care, bracing, taping, and splinting under the supervision of a department professional.
- Prepare written documentation as directed by the department professional.
- Maintain appointment books, logs, and schedules as necessary for daily operations.
- Provide care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies.
- Maintain cleanliness of department, treatment areas, and equipment.
- Perform clerical duties such as writing patient charges and answering telephones.
- Comply with department policies, procedures, objectives, and safety, environmental, infection control, and quality assurance programs.
- Participate in educational programs, in-service meetings, and attend other meetings as required.
- Perform other duties as directed by the supervising athletic trainer and/or Lead Athletic Trainer.
Requirements:
- High school graduate required.
- One to two years of college preferred with some experience in patient care and working knowledge of medical terminology.
- Ability to lift and transfer patients, maintain treatment areas, and perform upkeep on equipment and supplies.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and communicate effectively with hospital personnel.
Physical Effort Required/Physical Demands:
Intermittent exertion in positioning, lifting, transferring patients, equipment, or other materials. Total body lifts onto a stretcher of injured athletes. Walking and standing predominant, although intermittent running required sometimes with emergencies.
