We are seeking a highly skilled and certified Lifeguard I to join our team at the Fairbanks North Star Borough. As a Lifeguard I, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety of spectators, participants, and staff involved in aquatic activities, as well as providing aquatic instructional programs.
Key Responsibilities- Perform lifesaving and first aid procedures as appropriate for the situation
- Teach learn to swim programs to a wide variety of community members, including those experiencing a disability and senior citizens
- Monitor and enforce proper safety rules and activities in swimming area
- Provide routine clean-up, sanitizing, and general maintenance in pool and locker room areas
- Handle cash, make change, operate credit card machine
- Perform State of Alaska required pool water testing
- Complete daily attendance and revenue reports as instructed
- Assist in planning and implement special events and programs
- Prepare daily and monthly lesson plans for all learn to swim classes
- Evaluate and recommend swim levels to new students and resolve customer concerns regarding swim lessons
- Register students and perform aquatic instruction at all levels of swimming programs and other special conditioning activities
- Eighteen years of age at time of employment
- Upon hire, must possess and maintain certification in Standard First Aid, Lifeguarding/Water Park Training, and CPR-PR as recognized by the American Red Cross (or equivalent)
- Must obtain within 180 days of hire and maintain afterwards Water Safety Instructor certification
- All qualified candidates must be able to demonstrate all lifesaving and first aid skills required by the position
- Six months of experience in aquatic instruction, class preparation, and organization
- Ability to deal with the public in a pleasant, tactful, and courteous manner
- Basic computer skills, including word, excel and email functions
- Ability to operate a point-of-sale computer system
- Knowledge of Alaska Dept of Environmental Conservation health codes and regulations for pool operations
This position requires a criminal background check, which includes fingerprinting. A proficiency test may be administered. The position falls under the Borough's Blood Borne Pathogen (BBP) Exposure Control Program as it is reasonably anticipated that infrequent exposure to blood or other bodily fluids may occur while performing some job duties.
