Job Summary

UC San Diego is seeking a skilled Lab Mechanician to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, fabricating, and maintaining specialized equipment and research prototypes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conceptualize and design specialized equipment and research prototypes
  • Operate all types of machine tools, including lathes, milling machines, and grinders
  • Fabricate and assemble components using a variety of materials, including metals, plastics, and ceramics
  • Perform journey-level mechanical/machinist and/or welding work
  • Work with engineers, researchers, and student staff to design and fabricate equipment
Requirements
  • High school graduation and six years of metal shop experience
  • Journey-level skill in the operation of all standard machine shop equipment
  • Experience in facilitative design, fabrication, and production of instruments, hardware, and projects
  • Knowledge of tool design and metallurgy
  • Ability to work with a variety of materials, including metals, plastics, and ceramics
Working Conditions

The successful candidate will be required to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines. The position requires the ability to lift heavy objects and work in a physically demanding environment.
