Position Overview

The Agricultural Extension Specialist, focusing on Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences, is responsible for delivering up-to-date, research-driven information to the community through various outreach methods tailored to meet the needs of diverse groups. This role involves collaborating closely with farmers, agribusinesses, community stakeholders, and Extension Leadership Councils. The Specialist will engage with relevant agents and experts to pinpoint and prioritize agricultural challenges, opportunities, and issues; utilize farm visits to stay informed about local agricultural needs and concerns; and enhance communication among producers, marketers, processors, and consumers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain a strong knowledge base in the field by participating in ongoing training and professional development.
  • Collaborate with citizens and local, state, and federal officials to support Virginia's preparedness and response to natural disasters and emergencies.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability while fostering a team-oriented environment, yet also possess the ability to work independently.
  • Actively promote diversity and inclusion within Extension programs, ensuring broad participation and adherence to civil rights policies.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution. The position requires demonstrated skills in recruiting, training, and managing volunteers, as well as the ability to lead educational programs effectively. Proficiency in computer technology for educational purposes and excellent communication skills are essential, particularly in engaging with low-income and minority communities. The role necessitates travel for in-person leadership and community partnership development, with limited exceptions for remote work.

A master's degree is preferred for this position.

$45,000 - $65,000
