The Audit Manager serves as the primary contact between the firm's partners, clients, and the audit team. This role entails overseeing multiple auditing and accounting projects, ensuring effective scheduling, staffing, and coordination of engagement workflows. The Audit Manager is also responsible for training and developing team members while fostering relationships to generate new business opportunities for the firm. Compliance with professional standards and regulations is a critical aspect of this position.
Key Performance Expectations:
- Oversee all stages of audit, compilation, or review engagements.
- Plan, schedule, and allocate resources for engagements, delegating tasks to audit staff to enhance workflow efficiency.
- Maintain ongoing communication with clients, possessing a comprehensive understanding of their business and the industries they operate in.
- Supervise audit staff, providing on-the-job training and reviewing their work papers and reports.
- Encourage staff development through constructive feedback and continuous evaluation of their strengths and areas for improvement, acting as a mentor to junior team members.
- Develop and manage engagement budgets, analyzing any significant variances from established budgets.
- Prepare engagement letters for partner approval.
- Foster a high standard of professionalism within the team.
- Keep partners informed of critical developments during engagements, analyzing issues and proposing solutions.
- Communicate engagement progress, challenges, and resolutions to clients.
- Prepare client invoices and clarify fee structures.
- Assist with departmental or firm-wide administrative functions as directed by Audit Partners.
- Acquire, develop, and retain clients, nurturing relationships with potential clients for the firm’s services.
- Manage all client engagements efficiently and professionally, regardless of complexity.
- Evaluate internal controls and review work programs created by staff.
- Anticipate potential issues and questions that may arise during engagements.
- Ensure financial statements and reports are prepared in accordance with professional and firm standards, as well as regulatory requirements.
- Possess a thorough understanding of the firm's philosophy and its stance on financial matters.
Administrative Responsibilities:
Managers are accountable for all engagements and various administrative tasks, including:
- Performing all administrative and professional functions of subordinate staff.
- Conducting performance reviews for staff members.
- Exhibiting strong communication skills to relay information effectively to all levels of the firm, including partners and clients.
- Preparing engagement budgets.
- Building client trust and respect, creating opportunities to offer additional services and attract new business.
- Managing client billing processes.
- Working independently while identifying issues to discuss with partners prior to decision-making.
- Contributing to the development of responsible and trained staff through recruitment and training initiatives.
- Participating in the firm’s business development efforts.
- Preparing additional reports and projects as requested by partners.
- Serving as a content developer and instructor in educational programs within the department or firm-wide.
- Performing other duties as assigned.

Managers are expected to pursue professional development by:
- Promoting the firm to enhance profitability through involvement in civic, business, and professional organizations, while targeting connections with industry professionals.
- Recruiting qualified staff and managing administrative responsibilities.
- Learning and implementing new technologies introduced by the firm.
- Engaging in career development programs to enhance managerial, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Required Education, Experience, and Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or a Master's degree in accounting. A degree in another business discipline may qualify if it includes sufficient accounting credits for CPA eligibility.
- A valid certified public accountant's license is mandatory.
- Proven ability to generate new business for a CPA firm.
- Clear and concise communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
- Commitment to continuing professional education as mandated by the AICPA and relevant state society, averaging 40 hours annually.
- Membership in good standing with the American Institute of CPAs and applicable state society.
- Proficiency in computer use and familiarity with tax software (preferably CCH) and tax research tools.
- Willingness to travel frequently for client meetings and seminars, utilizing a personal vehicle.
- Occasional overnight travel for client engagements, meetings, or seminars may be required.
- Flexibility for occasional overtime work throughout the year, particularly during peak periods.
- Minimal safety hazards associated with general office working conditions.
