Patent Attorney Job Description

Russell Tobin & Associates is seeking a highly skilled Patent Attorney to join our team. As a Patent Attorney, you will be responsible for providing expert counsel on patent matters, including creation, acquisition, licensing, litigation, and strategy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work on patent matters, including patent creation, acquisition, licensing, litigation, and strategy.
  • Collaborate with engineering, product, and legal teams to mitigate IP risk and protect business and innovations.
  • Analyze inbound license demands, patents asserted against the company, claim charts, prior art, patents available for sale, patent assets, and risk in M&A transactions.
  • Research patent, trade secret, and other intellectual property laws and competitive patents and products to protect innovations and enable continued development and innovation.
  • Learn about the company and its products and services, along with relevant industry technologies.
  • Make smart judgments, navigate risks, and creatively manage internal and external challenges on patent matters.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of experience with patent litigation, creation, and/or transactions.
  • Ability to handle a wide variety of patent and trade secret matters and proactively collaborate with various teams.
  • Understanding of patent terminology, processes, requirements, and systems, familiarity with patent database software, ability to conduct prior art searches, and create and analyze claim charts.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with artificial intelligence and machine learning, web technologies, social products, technologies, and platforms, and/or the mobile space.
  • Nimble, fast-moving, and excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to creatively think outside-the-box, articulate technical concepts in an easy-to-understand manner, and adapt and prioritize while maintaining a big-picture focus on the company's mission and goals.
  • Ability to negotiate and collaborate effectively and build strong relationships.
  • J.D. degree (or foreign equivalent) and membership in at least one U.S. state bar.
