The Department of Corrections, Division of Health and Rehabilitation Services (HARS), is seeking a qualified individual for the role of Senior Psychiatric Nurse Leader based in Anchorage, Alaska.


Overview:
This position operates under the guidance of the Chief Mental Health Officer and entails:

Leadership Responsibilities:
Provide direction and oversight to a team of Advanced Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners, ensuring quality assurance in the services rendered.

Clinical Duties:
Identify, evaluate, and effectively respond to individuals experiencing mental health challenges, substance use symptoms, and those at risk of self-harm.

Address the psychiatric needs of offenders across the state, utilizing both in-person consultations and telehealth services for remote areas.

Prescriptive Authority:
Prescribe Schedule II-V medications in accordance with departmental protocols, state licensing mandates, and the prescriptive authority granted by the Alaska Board of Nursing or the Alaska Medical Board.

This role is primarily based at the Anchorage Central Office, with responsibilities extending to correctional facilities and telehealth engagements. Collaboration with administrative staff, correctional officers, mental health clinicians, and medical personnel is essential.

Qualifications:
Eligible candidates must possess authorization to practice as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in the State of Alaska.

A minimum of one year of experience in providing comprehensive psychiatric care is required, including conducting evaluations, treating severe mental illnesses, and prescribing psychotropic medications.

Management Skills:
Demonstrated ability in program management, administration, and supervisory techniques to effectively oversee operations and achieve program objectives.

  • Supervising and training junior personnel while monitoring and assessing performance.
  • Instructing and mentoring lower-level medical team members to achieve proficiency.

Some positions may necessitate passing a background investigation, including fingerprinting, as a condition of employment. Availability for shift assignments and on-call duties may be required.

Additional requirements may include application for and renewal of a DEA Registration Number, allowing the prescription of controlled substances as a government healthcare provider, along with registration with the Alaska Prescription Drug Monitoring Program.

In addition to maintaining licensing requirements, some roles may require certifications such as Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Basic Life Support, and others as applicable.
