Position Summary:
The Building Compliance Inspector is tasked with evaluating construction projects to ensure adherence to relevant building codes, regulations, and standards. This role is vital for maintaining public safety, confirming structural soundness, and promoting high-quality construction practices throughout the building lifecycle. The position may involve deployment to areas affected by disasters.
Deployment Areas:
Responsibilities may extend to various regions, including but not limited to Delaware, DC, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
Key Duties:
- Inspection Coordination: Organize and manage inspections of construction sites at different phases, including foundation, framing, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and final assessments, in line with applicable codes and regulations.
- Regulatory Compliance: Perform comprehensive inspections of construction projects to ensure conformity with building codes, zoning laws, fire safety standards, environmental regulations, and other pertinent requirements.
- Documentation Review: Analyze construction plans, blueprints, specifications, and permit applications for accuracy and compliance with regulatory standards before conducting inspections.
- Quality Control: Evaluate the quality of workmanship, materials, and construction practices, identify deficiencies or deviations from approved plans, and recommend corrective measures.
- Safety Evaluations: Assess construction sites for safety risks, compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, and the implementation of necessary safety protocols to protect workers and the public.
- Reporting and Documentation: Record inspection results, observations, and violations using standardized forms and maintain precise records of inspections, violations, and actions taken.
- Stakeholder Communication: Relay inspection outcomes, findings, and recommendations to contractors, builders, developers, architects, engineers, and other stakeholders, fostering collaboration to resolve issues and achieve compliance.
- Enforcement Procedures: Issue stop-work orders, violation notices, correction orders, and citations for non-compliance, and monitor enforcement actions to ensure timely resolution of issues.
- Public Assistance: Provide guidance to property owners, developers, contractors, and the public regarding building codes, permit requirements, inspection processes, and compliance matters.
- Continuous Learning: Stay updated on changes in building codes, regulations, construction techniques, and industry best practices through ongoing training and professional development.
Qualifications:
- Experience: A minimum of 10 years in a related field, with several years in construction, building inspection, or code enforcement.
- Skills: Strong attention to detail, excellent communication abilities, proficiency in inspection tools and software, and the capacity to work independently.
- Certifications: Certification as a Building Inspector or Construction Inspector from a recognized organization is highly desirable.
- Flexibility: Willingness to travel and work in disaster-affected areas for extended periods.
Additional Preferences:
- Specialized certifications in specific inspection areas (e.g., electrical, plumbing).
- Experience with construction management software and geographic information systems (GIS).
- Knowledge of sustainable building practices and energy efficiency standards.
