Position Overview

This role represents an entry-level opportunity in the surgical grossing field. The selected candidate will conduct gross examinations of small, uncomplicated specimens under the guidance of a technical supervisor or laboratory director.

Key Responsibilities
  • Execute routine and specialized tasks related to the preparation of surgical specimens for histological analysis, adhering to established policies and procedures.
  • Ensure accurate specimen accessioning and labeling.
  • Maintain the integrity of both specimen and patient identification.
  • Articulate gross anatomical characteristics of standard, uncomplicated surgical specimens, ensuring all lesions, markings, and sutures are documented.
  • Demonstrate capability in grossing low to moderately complex specimens, such as gastrointestinal biopsies and uncomplicated skin biopsies, under appropriate supervision.
  • Refer non-routine, complex surgical specimens to Pathologist Assistants or Pathologists.
  • Document measurements, weight, volume, and any notable findings as necessary.
  • Dissect surgical specimens and prepare tissues for histological processing.
  • May receive training to perform basic histology functions, including embedding, microtomy, and routine staining, provided all qualifications are met.
  • Conduct specimen preparation on non-gynecological specimens, including cytopreparation and staining, after completing relevant training.
  • Complete all necessary documentation, including workload records and temperature charts.
  • Adhere to laboratory procedures related to job responsibilities.
  • Engage directly with pathologists regarding gross dissection and description tasks, particularly for defined specimen types requiring direct supervision.
  • Identify and address issues that may negatively impact test performance or result reporting, or promptly notify the appropriate supervisor.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate safety, quality control, and quality assurance standards.
  • Adhere to all local, federal, CLIA, and CAP regulations.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace.
  • Fulfill all corporate continuing education requirements.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications

Required Experience:
  • Fulfill all requirements outlined in corporate Minimum Qualifications for Personnel Performing Tissue Gross Examinations SOP and 1988 CLIA CFR.
  • One year of experience in histology and/or grossing.

Physical and Mental Requirements:
  • Normal duties may involve lifting and carrying objects: frequently lifting 1 to 10 pounds, occasionally lifting 11 to 25 pounds, and seldom lifting 36 to 50 pounds; objects over 50 pounds require assistance.
  • Ability to stand and work at a bench for extended periods.
  • Frequent walking and/or standing required.
  • May need to utilize various manual tools and laboratory instruments, necessitating significant manual dexterity.
Education:
Associates Degree or Bachelor's Degree

Licenses/Certifications:
Current state licensure, if applicable (Required)
