Job Overview

The Lexington School for the Deaf is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Deaf Education Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our educational community, you will play a vital role in implementing the school's educational curriculum in one or more academic subjects appropriate for K-8 students.

About the Role

We are looking for an exceptional teacher who can create engaging lesson plans, modify materials to suit students' current learning levels, and integrate technology into the classroom effectively. The successful candidate will have prior experience working with deaf students, preferably with New York State Teaching Certification and a Master's degree in Deaf Education or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Create and implement effective lesson plans that cater to diverse learning styles.
  • Develop and implement a motivating curriculum for K-8 students, aligned with New York State Learning Standards.
  • Modify lesson plans and materials to suit students' current learning levels, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility.
  • Effectively integrate technology, such as Schoology and Google, into the classroom to enhance student engagement and outcomes.
  • Maintain relationships with families and legal guardians, keeping them informed of their child's progress.
  • Supervise students outside the classroom during recess, field trips, or school-related events.
  • Monitor and track student progress, issuing grades and providing individualized support as needed.
  • Collaborate with other teachers and administrators to provide regular, individualized support for each student.
  • Support the school's Strategic Planning initiatives, demonstrating a commitment to the school's vision, purpose, and mission.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Deaf Education or a related field.
  • New York State Teaching Certification.
  • Prior experience working with deaf students strongly preferred.
  • American Sign Language (ASL) proficiency.
  • Knowledge of child cognitive development and various learning styles.
  • Prior knowledge of Thinking Maps and Schoology.
  • Strong Google Suite skills preferred.

Compensation

The estimated annual salary for this position is $65,000 - $85,000, depending on qualifications and experience. This figure reflects industry standards for a Deaf Education Specialist in the New York City area.
