Job Summary

UF Health Shands is seeking an ECMO Specialist to join our team in Gainesville. The successful candidate will play a critical role in the daily operation of the ECMO program, working under the direction of the ECMO Coordinator.

Key Responsibilities
  • ECMO Circuit Management: Monitor and troubleshoot the ECMO circuit and related equipment during the management period.
  • Circuit Function and Integrity: Maintain and assess ECMO circuit function and integrity.
  • Medication and Blood Product Administration: Ensure accurate and safe administration of blood products and medication delivery for patients ranging from neonatal to geriatric.
  • Patient Care: Work with bedside nurses to ensure patients on ECMO have adequate perfusion, correct acid-base balance, and maintain hemodynamic stability within ordered parameters.
  • CRRT Management: Manage CRRT when connected in-line with ECMO circuit and facilitate participation in Physical/Occupational Therapy.
  • Technical Skills: Perform technical skills with efficiency, accuracy, and safety, anticipating, troubleshooting, and managing crises and emergency situations according to policy and procedure.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Quality Control and Assurance: Perform quality control, quality assurance, and preventive maintenance according to policy and procedure.
  • Continuous Learning: Assume responsibility for continuous learning, engaging in educational activities annually or pursuing advanced academic education.
  • Quality Improvement: Maintain proactive involvement in quality improvement by identifying issues, planning, and evaluating quality.
  • Interdepartmental Collaboration: Assist other departments to cover staffing and/or patient care needs.
  • Transportation Support: Participate in domestic and international transport needs for ECMO, including ground, helicopter, and fixed-wing flights.
Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess either a graduate degree from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program, with current State of Florida licensure as a Registered Respiratory Therapist, or a graduate degree from an accredited Registered Nurse program, with a current State of Florida licensure.

A minimum of 2 years ICU experience is required. Preferred one year experience as an ECMO Specialist with Primer training.

Licensure and Certification
  • Basic Life Support
  • PALS (may be obtained within 6 weeks of hire)
  • ACLS (may be obtained within 6 weeks of hire)
