Established in 1964, the Detroit Job Corps Center is a renowned residential education and job training program, catering to young individuals aged 16-24. Our mission is to empower students with academic knowledge, career skills, and transitional support services for successful integration into the workforce.
As an Academic Instructor at our center, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our students. Your expertise and passion for teaching will inspire confidence and motivation in our students, helping them overcome challenges and achieve their academic goals.
The primary objectives of this position include:
- Designing and delivering individualized and group lessons to assist students in overcoming specific difficulties in mathematics and reading.
- Providing instruction to students enrolled in various subjects, including Reading, Mathematics, Workplace Communications, Employability Skills, Health Education, Driver's Education, or HSD/HSE.
- Conducting and managing academic classes effectively.
The responsibilities of this position can be summarized as follows:
Administration Procedures- Presents instruction in a regular classroom setting, focusing on areas such as Reading, Mathematics, Workplace Communications, Career Success Standards, Health Education, Driver's Education, or HSD/HSE.
- Fosters a positive and desirable atmosphere within the classroom, ensuring maximum student motivation and engagement.
- Maintains a high degree of discipline within the classroom to ensure optimal learning conditions.
- Establishes a strong rapport with students, promoting a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
- Collaborates with career tech instructors to coordinate curriculum development and implementation.
- Utilizes available resources at the Center to create engaging and effective lesson plans.
- Makes adequate preparation for the classroom, considering factors like student needs and course materials.
- Records and maintains accurate student data, including test scores, evaluations, incident reports, achievement awards, and other relevant information.
- Participates in ESPs (evaluation of student performance) to assess student progress and identify areas for improvement.
- Evaluates student employees' performance in academics and career success standards, providing constructive feedback to enhance their skills.
- Works towards meeting performance standard goals, learning gains, HSD/HSE, trade completion, and career technical certification.
- Conducts audits of ATARS; develops corrective action as needed.
- Follows CDSS plan and Code of Conduct system daily.
- Assists with quarterly graduation exercises, celebrating students' achievements.
- Maintains good housekeeping in all areas and adheres to safety practices.
- Complies with all DOL guidelines, OFCCP regulations, Quality Assurance Plan (QAP), Serrato policies and procedures, Job Corps notices and bulletins, and Center policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates and abides by Serrato Corporation's core values and operating principles.
- Models, mentors, and monitors appropriate Career Success Standards.
- Participates in PRH-mandated staff training, which is mandatory for all staff members.
- Performs other duties as assigned by management.

The ideal candidate should possess:
- A minimum of one to two years related experience in education.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel.
- Computer literacy with basic computer functions, email, internet, and basic programs like Adobe Acrobat.
- Strong knowledge of the subject area of instruction and academic teaching practices.
- High-level communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to motivate, inspire, and train students effectively.
In terms of qualifications, we require:
- A Bachelor's degree in education from a four-year college or university.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certified, licensed, or accredited to teach in the State of Michigan or willingness to become certified.
We offer a competitive salary of $**,550 per year, based on the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' average salary for an academic instructor in Detroit, MI. This amount may vary depending on qualifications and experience.
This role requires occasional lifting and moving up to 25 pounds. The work environment involves occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions and varying noise levels.
