We are seeking a highly skilled Environmental Scientist to join our team at the State of Tennessee. As an Environmental Scientist, you will be responsible for performing a wide range of professional environmental work, including inspections, monitoring, problem identification, sample collection, report writing, corrective action, emergency response, surveying, lab work, and enforcement duties in environmental regulatory, radiological health, natural resources, or sustainable practices program areas.
Key Responsibilities- Investigate complaints and develop corrective recommendations for identified problems.
- Determine the validity and severity of an incident and appropriate response.
- Analyze available information and make recommendations to ensure the best solution is chosen to meet regulatory, project, and/or stakeholders' needs.
- Interpret findings, results, and communicate interpretation of regulations, policy, guidance to stakeholders.
- Prepare various publications, reports, technical documents, maps, and plans.
- Compile legally defensible environmental documents.
- Compile, process, and review records, data, operational plans, enforcement action requests, reports, etc.
- Review Quality Assurance/Quality Control parameters, specific to and required by acceptable methodologies, to ensure they are performed with each data set.
- Prepare statistical/metric reports for aquatic, terrestrial, and wetland evaluations.
- Perform laboratory or field tests based on specific sample requirements.
- Perform studies of environmental pollution or ionizing radiation and any socioeconomic effects.
- Conduct inspections of equipment, structures, and/or material, to ensure proper installation, maintenance, and/or operation.
- Operate personal or assigned vehicles, in accordance with agency policy and procedures, as well as all traffic laws.
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in environmental science, physical sciences, ecology, sustainability, life sciences, environmental health, pre-medicine, engineering, or other acceptable science or natural resource related field.
- One year of full-time professional environmental program, natural resource conservation work, or full-time professional work that involved ensuring compliance with radiation safety standards and/or regulations.
- Valid motor vehicle operator's license at the time of appointment.
- Ability to work in a team environment and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
- Ability to analyze complex data and make recommendations to ensure compliance with regulations.
- Master's degree in environmental science, physical sciences, ecology, sustainability, life sciences, environmental health, pre-medicine, engineering, or other acceptable science or natural resource related field.
- Two years of full-time professional environmental program, natural resource conservation work, or full-time professional work that involved ensuring compliance with radiation safety standards and/or regulations.
- Experience in environmental compliance, natural resource management, or sustainable practices.
The selected candidate will work in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities and deadlines. The candidate must be able to work independently and as part of a team, and must be able to communicate effectively with stakeholders. The candidate must also be able to analyze complex data and make recommendations to ensure compliance with regulations.
