Job Title: City Solicitor

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced City Solicitor to join our team at the City of Medford. As the chief legal administrator, you will be responsible for overseeing the provision of legal services to the City, the Mayor, City Council, and all City departments, boards, and commissions.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct legal research and draft opinions on various legal and policy issues.
  • Manage the legal work of in-house and contracted employees, and facilitate the work of paralegal and other department staff.
  • Maintain an active litigation case load from intake to conclusion before state and federal courts and administrative agencies.
  • Review, negotiate, and sign off on all City contracts for goods and services.
  • Advise on negotiation of labor contracts for the City's labor unions with the City's Negotiations team.
  • Manage the resolution of tort claims against the City and seek collection on claims on behalf of the City.
  • Draft state legislation, Home Rule Petitions, and City ordinances, rules, and regulations.
  • Appear before City boards and commissions.
  • Interact with City department heads to manage City projects.
  • Prepare and oversee the administration of the department's annual operating budget.
  • Serve as the City's official Keeper of Record for all documents in the Law Department.
  • Serve as the City's Records Access Officer in responding to public records requests.
Requirements:
  • Juris Doctor degree with more than ten years of prior work experience preferably in a municipal law practice at a partner level.
  • Member in good standing with the State's Bar of Massachusetts.
  • Admission in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
  • U.S. First Circuit Court of Appeals is desired but not required.
Working Conditions:

The City Solicitor will work in a standard indoor office environment with a moderate noise level. This is not a remote position.
