The Clinical Pathology Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting pathologists during autopsies and the examination of surgical specimens, which includes the meticulous organization of clinical data prior to analysis.


Responsibilities:
A typical day for a Clinical Pathology Assistant at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:


Assisting, under the guidance of the pathologist, in the selection, preparation, and dissection of surgical tissue samples for routine microscopic evaluation, immunofluorescence, electron microscopy, and other specified studies.

Supporting the photography and detailed description of surgical specimens.

Ensuring the accuracy of patient information related to surgical specimens and providing precise gross descriptions.


Assisting in the preparation of tissue samples for intraoperative consultations (frozen sections), which includes embedding, cutting on a cryostat, and staining tissue slides.


Collecting fresh tissue samples for Biorepository tissue banking and ancillary studies such as cytogenetics, flow cytometry, and snap freezing for therapeutic and research purposes.

Utilizing the Faxitron for obtaining x-ray images and transmitting them to the PACS system.

Maintaining equipment, ensuring adequate supplies, and upholding cleanliness standards necessary for gross anatomic dissection.

Assisting the pathologist in preparing materials for both intra- and interdepartmental educational sessions.

Performing all necessary computer system functions to ensure timely reporting of results.


Assisting support staff and/or pathology residents, as directed by a pathologist, in conducting post-mortem examinations, which includes photography, external examination, situ inspection, evisceration, dissection, data recording, and any other related tasks as needed.

Undertaking additional duties and/or projects as assigned.

Adhering to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications:
Education, Knowledge, Skills and

Abilities Required:

A Master's Degree from a NAACLS accredited institution as a Pathologists' Assistant, with training that encompasses both theoretical lectures and hands-on clinical training in anatomic pathology, specifically surgical and autopsy pathology, OR a U.S. or accredited Foreign Medical Graduate (MD) with or without ASCP-PA certification, including 5+ years of grossing experience (including high complexity large cases), OR a Bachelor's degree.

The degree must be in Health Sciences or another biological discipline with 8-10 years of experience as a PA (historic/grandfathered).

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

Proficient computer skills, which may include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and

Abilities Preferred:
A Master's Degree.

Licenses and Certifications Required:
American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification or eligibility.

ASCP certification is preferred for on-the-job trained PAs in a hospital laboratory performing technical duties related to anatomic pathology, with documented competencies in prosection of simple to complex specimens.
