We are seeking a highly skilled Certified Surgical Technician to join our Cardiothoracic OR team at Mount Sinai Health System. As a key member of our surgical team, you will be responsible for assisting in the performance of routine and delegated functions under the supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse or Physician.
Responsibilities- Apply principles and practices of asepsis, perform surgical scrub, gowning, and gloving procedures.
- Set up sterile instrument tables and prepare supplies according to the type of operation, assist in draping the patient and operative area as needed.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgeon for instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies, observe the patient and be prepared for emergencies.
- Maintain accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments with the circulating nurse, report discrepancies according to established policy and procedure.
- Assist in the care, handling, and disposition of specimens according to policy, assist in applying dressings and securing drainage systems.
- Assist the Registered Professional Nurse in performing circulating functions according to established guidelines.
- Assemble necessary supplies according to patient and surgical procedure requirements, provide special equipment before, during, and after the surgical procedure as needed.
- Observe and protect the patient by correct positioning, application of restraint, strict aseptic practice, and maintenance of aseptic environment.
- Position the patient, adjust the table and accessories as required for the procedure, prepare the operative area, and assist in draping as directed.
- Assist in maintaining accurate sponge, needle, and instrument counts, report discrepancies to the surgical team and charge nurse, complete operative counts, and related records accurately and legibly.
- Observe personnel in the room constantly, control traffic, report, and correct breaks in aseptic technique promptly, maintain and care for all specimens as directed to prevent loss or damage.
- Assist in applying dressings, moving the patient, and transferring to the recovery room as directed, assist in room clean-up and make preparations for the next procedure.
- Assist the nurse in preparing medications or solutions to be administered during surgery, save all medication vials and/or ampules until the patient leaves the room, and announce in an audible voice the name, concentration, amount, and route of administration of the medication.
- Function as a professional role model, inclusive of acting as a preceptor for students, hires newly hired staff, and incumbent staff, demonstrate accountability for our practice based on institutional/regulatory agency policies/procedures.
- Maintain clinical competence and be responsible for own professional development, perform scrub and sterile instrument duties per established guidelines.
- Do not dispense narcotics or control drugs under any circumstances, the Registered Professional Nurse dispenses these drugs to the physician.
- Assist in transporting patients to and from the surgical suite as directed, participate in the care and storage of instruments/special equipment in the operating rooms.
- Assist in maintaining quotas of current dates for sterile supplies and equipment in the operating rooms and storage areas, assist in keeping the operating room and sterile storage areas and equipment in good order, assist in care of storage closets and cabinets.
Prefer experience in an operating room setting, NBSTSA Certification Required, BLS Certification required, Preferred Cardiac OR Surgical tech experience, 2 years Associate Degree - surgical tech program.
