About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Underwriting Director to join our team at Steadily, a rapidly growing insurance technology company. As a key member of our leadership team, you will be responsible for driving outstanding loss ratios and scaling our underwriting team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Underwriting Excellence: Produce excellent loss ratios through underwriting discipline, leading a high-performing underwriting team, and implementing novel and traditional underwriting practices.
  • Process Development: Continuously build out workflows, processes, vendors, and tools for new business, underwriting, renewal underwriting, and accumulation management for a rapidly scaling organization.
  • Leadership: Take a hands-on approach to leadership, handling front-line underwriting work for a significant period until the team grows to a certain size. For at least the first six months, 50% of your job will be traditional Senior Underwriter work.
  • File Management: Manage highly organized underwriting files that exceed the expectations of internal and external auditor scrutiny, including necessary documentation and regular diary entries.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with claims, product, actuarial, and customer service teams to ensure profitability and an excellent experience for customers.
  • Quality Assurance: Implement a robust QA process to ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines, state-mandated timelines, and contractual requirements.
  • Team Leadership: Hire and lead our growing underwriting staff who will drive underwriting excellence for years to come.
  • Reporting: This position reports directly to the Chief Insurance Officer.
Requirements
  • Experience: At least 7 years of experience in property insurance underwriting and 3+ years of underwriting management experience. Knowledgeable on peak perils such as hail, hurricane, wildfire, winter storm, earthquake, flood, etc.
  • Skills: Prior experience with Salesforce and/or CPCU is a plus. Self-driven, resourceful, and able to manage a large workload and projects with minimal oversight.
  • Insurance Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of standard underwriting practices, regulatory environment, policy language, vendor management, risk selection, loss drivers, and more.
  • Leadership: Proven ability to scale and lead a high-performing team. Team members respect you for your competence and willingness to roll up your sleeves.
  • Project Management: Above-average project management skills, with the ability to move the ball forward on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Desire for Growth: Hungry for growth and willing to roll up your sleeves and hustle in a rapidly scaling organization.
