SUMMARY:

Under close supervision, performs a variety of para-professional nursing tasks related to the care and treatment of patients in a healthcare setting.

Engage in routine inpatient and/or outpatient nursing responsibilities that do not necessitate a license. Execute related duties as required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

NOTE:
The following responsibilities are typical for employees in this role. However, employees may undertake other related duties at a similar level. Not all responsibilities listed are necessarily performed by each individual in this classification.

Assist patients with meals, personal hygiene, and incontinence care; administer cleansing and retention enemas; assist in catheterization and bladder irrigations.

Support registered nurses and licensed vocational nurses in delivering treatment and other nursing tasks as required; promptly respond to call lights and ensure patient comfort and safety by adjusting beds, lights, bed rails, pillows, and bedside tables/equipment; observe and report any changes in patients' condition/status; maintain cleanliness and orderliness in patient areas.

Set up suction equipment; perform nasal and tracheal suctioning; administer oxygen using tents and masks; assist in turning and positioning patients; help patients move to and from wheelchairs and gurneys; and assist patients with ambulation and crutch walking.

Measure and record patients' vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure); conduct routine tests such as urine dipstick, urine pregnancy tests, vision and hearing tests, and promptly report findings to supervising personnel; administer simple range of motion exercises; assist in applying traction devices; position and drape patients for examination or treatment; transport patients to other areas of the facility using wheelchairs or gurneys.

When assigned as a sitter, responsible for protecting the patient(s)/resident(s) from harm and assisting in meeting their emotional and physical needs through continuous one-to-one observation.

Provide ongoing observation and basic patient care. Educate patients on health-related topics or discharge information within the scope of duties.

When assigned to an outpatient setting, prepare examination rooms, ensuring they are stocked with necessary supplies, equipment, and instruments for the type of clinic being held; weigh, take, and document patients' vital signs; assist physicians or mid-level practitioners during examinations as directed; collect, label, and transport specimens to the lab; assist in maintaining a clean and well-supplied clinical area; monitor expiration dates of medical supplies and medications.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
High School diploma or GED with additional training preferred. College graduate preferred.

Minimum Experience:
Six months of para-professional nursing training as a Hospital Services Trainee or equivalent of one year full-time recent experience performing work comparable to a Nursing Assistant in a healthcare facility.

Required Licenses/Certifications:
BLS - Basic Life Support Certification issued by the American Heart Association. Other advanced life support certifications may be required based on unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.

Required Licenses/Certifications:
CPI - Crisis Prevention Intervention Training (required for all positions in specific facilities and certain positions in the Emergency Department).

Required Licenses/Certifications:
Current Nursing Assistant certification (required for positions in specific hospitals).
