Landfill Operator

This non-union position performs tasks involving physical labor, basic cleanup and maintenance, and operation of equipment at our Landfill in Duluth, MN.
Key Responsibilities- Operates landfill equipment as necessary, including dozers, compactors, water trucks, skid steers, and backhoes.
- Performs general maintenance on landfill equipment.
- Screens loads for unacceptable waste and valuable recyclables.
- Directs landfill traffic to ensure safe delivery of waste into the landfill.
- Screens and sorts load dumps in the transfer station building.
- Bales cardboard, plastic, and aluminum.
- Performs lawn care maintenance activities and general grounds maintenance.
- Picks up windblown debris/litter generated from facility operations.
- Provides backup assistance with operation of the weigh scale.
- Assists customers with transactions.
- Assists Landfill Manager with other facets of landfill operation as requested.
- Six to twelve months of construction or related experience.
- Basic knowledge and ability to work with equipment, materials, and supplies found in construction work.
- Ability to view and abide by Veit's safety training video.
- Ability to follow proper use and safety guidelines.
- Willingness and ability to perform manual work.
- Demonstrated knowledge of safety precautions and procedures.
- Good communication skills both oral and written when working with all levels of management and employees, external vendors, and other business associates.
- Ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions.
- Must have good interpersonal skills.
- Basic mathematic skills.
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
- Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency as required by management and/or project requirements.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- OSHA 10 certification.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
- Type III Landfill Certification.

Employee is exposed to environmental conditions, working near machines and loud noises associated with construction sites. Exposed to variable weather conditions including rain, snow, wind, cold, and heat.
