General Summary:
The Cardiac Monitoring Specialist is accountable for overseeing telemetry monitoring in the central monitoring facility, focusing on adult patients in inpatient units who require continuous cardiac surveillance. This role includes confirming the start and end of monitoring in collaboration with nursing staff, as well as ongoing observation of patients on cardiac monitors. The specialist is responsible for communicating any significant changes in cardiac parameters to the assigned nursing personnel.
Key Responsibilities:
- Adheres to HIPAA regulations and protocols.
- Effectively communicates relevant information to registered nurses.
- Provides uninterrupted cardiac monitoring for telemetry patients throughout the designated shift.
- Confirms patient demographics with the responsible RN.
- Obtains rhythm strips and updates the telemetry record within one hour of shift commencement or patient admission, documenting any rhythm changes and every six hours thereafter.
- Sets alarms and arrhythmia notifications tailored to each patient.
- Informs nursing staff of any alterations in cardiac parameters and rhythms.
- Recognizes lethal arrhythmias, promptly notifying the RN and documenting findings in the medical record.
- Ceases monitoring upon patient transfer or discharge.
- Maintains accurate departmental documentation, including telemetry logs.
- Exhibits professional conduct and demeanor in alignment with organizational behavior standards.
- Champions patient safety as a fundamental organizational value.
Additional Duties:
- Engages in departmental and organization-wide meetings and training sessions.
- Reviews and updates departmental policies and procedures annually.
- Performs other assigned responsibilities as needed.
Job Scope:
This role encompasses regular work situations with varying levels of complexity, guided by established procedures and moderate supervision.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position does not include supervisory duties.
Interpersonal Contacts:
Interactions typically occur within the healthcare facility, involving multiple departments and staff members, often concerning confidential matters. Communication may occur via telephone or messaging systems.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Knowledge and clinical experience in a diverse acute care environment.
- Familiarity with hospital equipment and information systems.
- Proficient in basic computer skills, communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English effectively.
Competencies:
Within the first 90 days, the specialist will ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations, communicate effectively with nursing staff, and provide continuous monitoring. Within 120 days, the specialist will be expected to maintain accurate telemetry records and set patient-specific notifications. By 180 days, the specialist will demonstrate professional behavior and participate in departmental meetings.
Education and Experience:
A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with BLS/CPR certification within the initial hiring period and EKG training within the first two months. Previous experience in a clinical setting is preferred.
Physical Demands:
This position primarily involves sedentary work, with occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs. It requires extensive computer use and may involve brief periods of standing or walking.
OSHA Exposure Category:
This role falls under OSHA Exposure Category 2, indicating no regular exposure to blood or body fluids, although unplanned tasks may involve such exposure.
