Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY

The Utility Worker I plays a crucial role in the ongoing operations related to water lines. This position is responsible for the installation, upkeep, and repair of water and sewer pipelines, as well as associated components such as taps, valves, meter services, fire hydrants, and manholes. The role also involves trench evacuation and shoring, backfilling, cutting, patching, repairing, and resurfacing streets.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Basic understanding of the operation and maintenance of water distribution and wastewater collection systems is essential.
  • Strong customer service skills are necessary.

Additional Requirements

  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug testing and ongoing compliance with drug testing regulations.
  • Availability to work weekends or varied shifts may be required.
  • Must be available for emergency call-ins.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • No felony convictions are permitted.
  • A valid CDL (Class A or B) Driver's License is mandatory.

OR

  • Must successfully complete the written portion of the Commercial Driver's License (CDL) exam (permit) within 90 days of hire.

AND

  • A Class "B" CDL must be obtained within the 6-month probationary period.

KEY FUNCTIONS

  1. Receives notifications regarding maintenance projects and assesses the necessary tools, equipment, and supplies for thorough and safe completion.
  2. Conducts site surveys to secure the area and posts safety signage.
  3. Operates or assists in excavation tasks while adhering to all safety protocols.
  4. Identifies specific lines requiring maintenance and ensures compliance with regulations from the State Department of Natural Resources and the City.
  5. Interacts with the public, contractors, and internal personnel in a professional manner.
  6. Responds promptly and accurately to requests from supervisors.
  7. Performs skilled procedures, including hand digging around existing utilities to prevent damage, ensuring correct installation depth, and completing repairs accurately.
  8. Secures incomplete job sites at the end of the workday to ensure public safety and project security.
  9. Adheres to all safety procedures, including the use of appropriate safety equipment.
  10. Assists in completing necessary follow-up and documentation to finalize projects.
