**Owner Operators**

The information below outlines how a position as an Owner Operator (also known as an Independent Contractor) can align with your lifestyle, long-term career goals, and desired work environment.

At its core, an owner-operator (OO) is a driver who owns the truck they operate, functioning as an independent business. For many in the trucking profession, becoming an OO signifies reaching the pinnacle of the industry. You are responsible for the ownership or financing of your truck, and you have the autonomy to choose your contracts, routes, and cargo.

As an OO, you are essentially a small business owner. Clients often prefer to work with OOs, as they tend to offer more competitive rates when opportunities arise. The nature of being an OO means that the driver and truck owner are one and the same, alleviating the financial burden of hiring and training additional drivers during fluctuating demand.

In addition to the personal attributes necessary for effective truck driving, an OO must possess the knowledge and skills to navigate the industry and foster mutually beneficial relationships with clients. These relationships must be developed to a level that surpasses that of other driver types. As an OO, you have reached the highest level in truck driving, and your experience equips you to handle a wide range of situations, from client interactions to vehicle maintenance and financial management.

Different materials necessitate various trailer types, each presenting its own set of challenges. Therefore, understanding the requirements for operating your truck and the trailer you are towing is crucial.

Tanker equipment is specifically designed for transporting various liquids and gases, ranging from water to gasoline to chemicals. Tankers include trailers solely for liquid transport and flatbed trailers with tanks secured. A tanker driver must assume a high level of responsibility and exercise extreme caution when loading and unloading liquids or gases. Some chemicals can pose environmental hazards if released, and others may require evacuations in the event of a spill.

Tanker drivers must maintain meticulous records, monitoring gauges during loading, transport, and unloading to ensure accuracy and safety. Compliance with hazardous material transportation laws is essential.

Tanker drivers are required to hold the (N) Tanker endorsement, and it is advisable to obtain the (H) Hazardous Materials endorsement or (X) combination endorsement. Without these endorsements, drivers may face limitations on the types of liquids they can transport.
