About This Role

We are seeking a skilled Instrumentation Specialist to join our team at the Detroit Medical Center. As an Instrumentation Specialist, you will play a critical role in ensuring the efficient flow of surgical instruments and supplies between the Operating Room and Central Sterile Processing (CSP) departments.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in sterile processing and instrumentation, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. They will be responsible for coordinating the delivery of sterile instruments and supplies to the Operating Room, as well as assisting in special projects and process improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in preparing the Operating Room suite for surgery by verifying instrument trays are available prior to case start times.
  • Transport sterile instruments and supplies to the Operating Room using appropriate standards and techniques, and perform package integrity checks to ensure proper packaging.
  • Monitor case flow during the day, track instrument needs, and notify CSP personnel in advance of any possible additions or emergent instrument needs.
  • Assist in removing soiled case carts or un-sterile instrumentation and scopes from the Operating Room to be returned to CSP for processing.
  • Participate in planning and coordination of instrument turnarounds with CSP staff, and communicate essential instrumentation information to the surgical team.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of surgical instruments and identify when instruments are broken, damaged, or not functioning properly, reporting issues to CSP management.
Requirements
  • High school graduate or equivalent; Associates degree preferred.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend English language.
  • 3+ years of experience in sterile processing; 5+ years preferred.
  • Certified Sterile Processing Technician through CBSPD or IAHCSMM.
