Job Overview

As part of the administrative framework of a specialized clinic, the Speech/Language Pathologist (SLP) will provide essential services to individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (ID/DD) who require these professional interventions.

In this collaborative environment, the SLP will work closely with all members of the treatment team to ensure effective communication and positive outcomes for clients.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Conduct comprehensive assessments to evaluate verbal and non-verbal communication skills, cognitive and perceptual language abilities, as well as speech, voice, and language capabilities. This may include dysphagia screenings and assessments as necessary.

2. Create individualized Treatment Plans that outline specific goals and objectives, detailing the nature, frequency, duration, and methods of recommended therapeutic interventions based on the Clinic Service Request and Assessment.

3. Implement therapeutic programs utilizing recognized speech/language pathology techniques aimed at enhancing, maintaining, or preventing the decline of communication functions. Focus areas may include receptive and expressive language, articulation, motor speech, fluency, voice resonance, and swallowing therapy.

4. Participate in team meetings regarding clients to address concerns, and to strategize on therapy development, modification, or cessation.

5. Maintain accurate documentation of all services rendered in accordance with established procedures set forth by the clinic and relevant oversight organizations.

6. Stay informed about advancements in the field of speech/language pathology by attending professional conferences and in-service training, while maintaining membership in relevant professional organizations.

7. Provide training sessions or demonstrations to clinic staff and residential program teams as needed, ensuring effective communication strategies are employed. Collaborate with workforce trainers to guarantee proper staff training.

8. Develop or facilitate the acquisition of augmentative communication systems for nonverbal clients, and provide training for both clients and staff on the use of these systems, including signing, picture boards, and electronic communication devices.

9. Adhere to the policies and procedures established by the overseeing bodies and the agency.

Qualifications:

Completion of a recognized Speech Language Pathologist program accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation is required, along with current licensure in New York State. A limited license may be necessary for Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) candidates. ASHA certification is preferred.
