General Overview
This role is primarily accountable for executing educational frameworks and support services in alignment with the Birth-to-Five Head Start Performance Standards. The Early Childhood Education Specialist is designated to the Birth-to-Five Head Start Program and plays a vital role within the Educational Department.
Key Responsibilities
Provides assistance to educational centers and staff in the execution of a comprehensive language program and instructional methodologies.
As a mentor within the classroom, the individual will engage in planning that initiates suitable activities that align with the established goals and objectives of the Birth-to-Five Head Start Program while adhering to state and federal regulations.
Involves observing and evaluating classroom activities in the Birth-to-Five Head Start Program while collaborating closely with the Education Coach Coordinator & Curriculum and Instruction Coordinator.
Acts as a classroom mentor to educators in developing a foundational literacy and curriculum program that fosters phonemic, print, and numerical awareness, enhancing early literacy experiences for children in the Birth-to-Five Head Start Program.
Takes charge of the preparation, execution, and coordination of the child development program for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.
Plans and collaborates with staff to ensure positive outcomes utilizing the Head Start Child Development Early Learning Framework and the Framework for Programs serving Infants/Toddlers and their families.
Coordinates and collaborates with the Education Coach Coordinator to implement center-based instructional strategies.
Serves as a mentor and trainer in the classroom, coordinating an effective early childhood, whole language education program.
Mentors, coaches, trains, and guides educators and families within the Birth-to-Five Head Start Program.
Provides support to initiatives that enhance the Birth-to-Five Head Start literacy program.
Conducts follow-up sessions with educators to discuss and clarify strategies presented during staff development and classroom demonstrations.
Ensures the implementation of effective professional development and curriculum resources.
Oversees and monitors project initiatives and submits necessary reports.
Manages a "Lending Library" that serves as a take-home resource for Birth-to-Five Head Start parents and their children.
Participates in training and support throughout the year.
Implements evaluative measures to assess the overall effectiveness of the project (e.g., CLASS, PIR, ongoing assessment).
Ensures that classroom materials and supplies are readily available to execute literacy strategies.
Enhances teaching techniques applicable to all children, including those with special needs (assists with behavior management).
Conducts a Classroom Observation Checklist biannually for educators, discussing and reviewing issues faced by the center or staff, and submits reports via database.
Travels to seminars and meetings as required.
Performs additional duties as assigned by the Education Coach Coordinator or Executive Director that benefit the Department and/or Agency.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- An Associate's Degree or higher in Early Childhood Education, and
- One (1) year of experience in an early childhood environment.
- Must successfully complete and maintain the following permits and certifications:
- Food handler's permit - to be renewed every two (2) years by expiration date
- First Aid/CPR certification; to be renewed every two (2) years by expiration date
- Exhibits effective leadership, management, and training capabilities.
- Articulates the agency's mission, instructional philosophy, and curriculum implementation strategies.
- Demonstrates knowledge of early childhood curriculum and instruction, including appropriate strategies, student assessments, and available resources.
- Leads, motivates, and engages others in a collaborative effort to produce and implement quality instructional programs.
- Performs job duties with precision, thoroughness, and attention to detail, occasionally working prolonged or irregular hours to complete tasks.
- Exhibits effective verbal and written communication skills with all Agency staff and the general public.
- Must be able to occasionally travel overnight for meetings, training, and workshops.
- Possesses strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently.
- Collaborates effectively with all project and Agency staff.
- Demonstrates appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.
- Ensures proficiency in computer skills and email for communication and research related to instructional activities.
- Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.
- Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug test, physical, and functional capacity evaluation prior to the first day of employment
- Must successfully pass and submit a pre-employment TB test and periodically as indicated by the regional Texas Department of State Health Services or local health authority.
- Requires a valid Texas Driver's License and liability insurance. Driving record is subject to review and approval by agency insurance carrier.
- Must have transportation and current liability coverage on the vehicle used for job duties. Some out-of-town travel may be required.
- Proof of work eligibility must be provided.
- Must maintain CLASS observer Reliability and ITERS standing.
- Normal physical activity includes sitting, standing, and walking during a typical workday.
- Requires occasional twisting at a desk when answering phone or typing.
- Requires occasional lifting and carrying of boxes of supplies weighing less than 20 lbs.
- Requires use of the five senses (hearing, seeing, touching, smelling, and tasting) to perform various job duties and in interactions with staff and clients.
- Requires the employee to use hands, arms, feet, legs, neck, and head while performing Agency tasks.
- Requires occasional bending, stooping, and reaching above shoulder level when operating a copier and retrieving files from cabinets.
- Requires replacing toner cartridges and paper trays in the copier.
- Requires frequent speaking and listening abilities with staff, co-workers, parents, supervisors, and volunteers; must be able to hear a child in distress.
