About the Role

Bright Green Strategies is seeking a highly skilled Sustainability Associate to join our team in Berkeley, California. As a key member of our Green Construction consulting team, you will play a critical role in promoting high-performance and green buildings for our multi-family housing developer clients in California.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in building science, energy efficiency, and sustainability, with experience in LEED, GreenPoint Rated, and HERS consulting services. You will work closely with our team to provide expertise and support to our clients, engaging in collaborative problem-solving, on-site testing, research, data collection, and analysis.

Responsibilities
  • Provide LEED for Homes, GreenPoint Rated, and HERS consulting services to our clients.
  • Collaborate with building developers, architects, engineers, and general contractors to achieve sustainability goals and communicate energy-efficient design models and green building proposals.
  • Communicate with the development team about potential construction issues related to the green building process.
  • Make recommendations to clients on reducing energy consumption by evaluating potential technologies for building applications and applying experience from previous projects.
  • Recommend ways to improve water efficiency, indoor air quality, and materials and resources used in building projects.
  • Work with our energy modeling team and act as a liaison between modeling and design teams, assisting in optimizing energy efficiency through energy modeling.
  • Identify key elements that must be modified to achieve a goal with multiple priorities.
  • Conduct in-field assessments, on-site diagnostics, field data collection, and analysis of residential new construction projects.
  • Determine and define sustainability goals, staffing, and tasks necessary for successful project completion.
  • Manage project budgets and schedules to meet deadlines and stay within budget, understanding the impact of relative costs and benefits on the project.
  • Report to the CEO on project status and coordinate with the CEO on short- and long-range issues affecting project success.
  • Continually communicate with the project team and clarify expectations, motivating and challenging team members.
  • Maintain up-to-date project information in project management tools, writing field and technical reports, responding to client issues, concerns, and needs.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the company and with outside contacts.
  • Support the development team by working with local jurisdictions to understand green building requirements.
  • Gain cooperation from technical and non-technical staff, consultants, and professionals from outside agencies to complete assigned tasks and projects.
  • Identify, analyze, and resolve problems with multiple priorities between internal departments and outside entities.
  • Build and grow new and existing client relationships.
Requirements
  • B.A. or B.S. with a major in Engineering, Architecture, Energy Management, Environmental Sciences, or Construction Management, with a demonstrated interest in building science.
  • Familiarity with LEED, GreenPoint Rated, Title-24 Energy Efficiency Standards, and CALGreen.
  • HERS rater certification and Building Performance Institute (BPI) certification are a plus.
  • Knowledge of energy modeling software, such as Energy Pro, is a plus.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Employees may be required to lift or move items up to 25 pounds in weight.

  • Strong verbal communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey technical information to audiences of various backgrounds and technological knowledge.
  • Strong written communication and editing skills, with written communication including client reports, correspondence, and meeting minutes.
  • Project management skills, including establishing priorities, planning, and scheduling work, managing multiple projects and priorities, and analyzing construction situations in the field.
  • Analytical skills, including experience performing research and compiling information from various sources, understanding and interpreting regulations and procedures, and basic mathematical skills.
  • Computational and software skills, including strong computer software, analytical, and computational skills to use a variety of Web-based and local software tools, such as LEED Online, HERS registry, and commonly used project management software applications.
