PRIMARY PURPOSE:
To ensure a safe, pleasant, and comfortable environment for students and staff by overseeing the operation and upkeep of all heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems within the district. The HVAC Technician is responsible for executing advanced HVAC tasks while operating under limited supervision, exercising significant initiative and independent judgment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- HVAC Technical school certification or Texas Air Conditioning and Refrigeration license required
- Refrigeration recovery certification
- Water-Cooled/Air-Cooled Chillers Certificate
- Must possess and maintain a valid Texas driver's license and be insurable
- Proficient in HVAC repair, maintenance, and installation methods
- Ability to interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, and written reference materials
- Skilled in diagnosing and resolving technical issues
- Proficient in using hand and power tools
- Basic computer knowledge and competence or the ability to acquire such knowledge
- Minimum of five years in the HVAC field
- Three years of experience with chilled water systems, cooling towers, and HVAC control systems
- At least three years of experience with HVAC Computer Maintenance programs
- Leads a team in completing assigned work orders.
- Assists in the operation and maintenance of all HVAC and refrigeration systems.
- Diagnoses and repairs issues in various heating and air conditioning systems, including rooftop units.
- Installs, relocates, and/or expands heating and air conditioning systems and components as necessary.
- Repairs, replaces, or calibrates controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring.
- Fabricates, assembles, and installs ductwork and piping in accordance with specifications and codes.
- Wires and connects motors, compressors, temperature controls, and humidity controls according to wiring schematics.
- Maintains Freon dispensing records to comply with federal regulations.
- Implements preventive maintenance schedules and procedures for all HVAC tools and equipment, including filter changes and condenser cleaning.
- Conducts duct cleaning and air quality assessments as required.
- Selects materials and hardware, providing time and material estimates.
- Keeps accurate records of materials and labor utilized.
- Inspects completed jobs to ensure cleanliness and quality.
- Collaborates with building principals and supervisors to finalize projects.
- Identifies necessary repairs on equipment following established inspection protocols.
- Responds to emergency calls as needed.
- Adheres to established safety protocols and techniques to perform job duties, ensuring equipment is in safe operating condition.
- Addresses unsafe conditions in the work area and reports any unresolvable issues to the supervisor immediately.
- Performs thermostatic adjustments and troubleshoots issues using HVAC computerized software.
- Ensures vehicles, equipment, and toolboxes are secured when unattended.
- Executes all duties safely to prevent injury to oneself and others.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Assists and supports the HVAC Department in managing, directing, supervising, and training staff to ensure the department functions effectively.
EQUIPMENT USED:
Meter, gauge, welding equipment, ladder, hoist, hand and power tools, pipe bender, propane torch, office equipment such as personal computer, calculator, fax machine.

Ability to concentrate, communicate effectively (both verbal and written), interpret, reason, read, compute, instruct, and maintain emotional control under stress; ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with frequent interruptions.
Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Ability to frequently lift and carry heavy weights (45 pounds and over), sit, stand, walk, climb (stairs, ladder, scaffold, or ramps), balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, pull, push, reach, perform repetitive hand motions, and maintain visual acuity. Exposure to temperature extremes, humidity, noise, and various environmental hazards is expected. Must be able to respond to after-hours emergencies as required.
