Position Title: Tunnel Engineer

Role Overview:

The Tunnel Engineer will be responsible for conducting engineering assessments and analyses for the design of tunnels and shafts in various geological conditions, including soft ground, mixed environments, and rock formations. Key responsibilities include:

  • Utilizing diverse tunnel construction techniques such as drill and blast, Sequential Excavation Method (SEM), and Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM).
  • Executing 3-D soil-structure interaction analyses, geotechnical evaluations, and dynamic assessments using advanced finite element modeling software.
  • Preparing comprehensive calculations, design schematics, and technical specifications.
  • Collaborating with Technical Leads, Project Directors, Project Managers, and design teams to ensure project success.
  • Applying expertise in rock and soil mechanics to assess potential failure modes and develop effective ground support strategies.
  • Generating project documentation, including Technical Memos, Geotechnical Data Reports, Interpretive Reports, and Basis of Design documents.
  • Characterizing and classifying subsurface conditions to inform tunneling methodologies based on geotechnical data.
  • Communicating design concepts through detailed sketches that illustrate support types, geometries, construction sequences, and instrumentation.
  • Employing tunnel analysis and design software such as PLAXIS 2D and 3D, FLAC/FLAC3D, among others.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering.
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in Tunnel Engineering and Design.
  • Experience with a variety of transit and water/wastewater tunnel projects.
  • Strong knowledge of soil and rock mechanics.
  • Background in structural engineering.
  • Proficiency in various tunneling methods including drill and blast, SEM, and TBM.
  • Expertise in tunnel analysis and design software (PLAXIS 2D and 3D, FLAC/FLAC3D, etc.).

Interpersonal Skills:

  • Ability to coordinate effectively with technical leads and project teams.
  • Strong communication skills for presenting design work through sketches and reports.
  • Experience in preparing thorough project documentation.

This role offers a hybrid work arrangement, requiring both on-site and remote work.
