Position Overview

Mesa Associates, Inc. is seeking a skilled Relay Settings Engineer with a minimum of 4 years of extensive experience in conducting power system protection coordination studies and settings at the transmission level.

The successful candidate will be tasked with:

  • Designing relay protection strategies utilizing microprocessor-based relays to safeguard transmission infrastructure.
  • Coordinating protection devices for various components including transmission lines, buses, transformers, capacitor banks, circuit breakers, and reactors at both local and remote facilities.
  • Creating relay logic to support specified protection schemes.
  • Understanding and adhering to utility compliance standards such as PRC-027 and FAC-008.
  • Providing remote support to on-site relay technicians during construction operations.

Additionally, the ideal candidate will:

  • Collaborate with the Engineering Manager and Principal Engineer to establish project goals, prepare design estimates, and outline project specifications and design methodologies for complex initiatives.
  • Serve as the Lead Engineer on coordination studies, engaging with clients, other engineering firms, and various departments within Mesa.
  • Proactively gather and analyze coordination study input data for future projects.
  • Develop the initial design strategy for significant phases of large projects or take full responsibility for engineering tasks on routine projects.
  • Adjust and refine standard schemes according to project requirements.
  • Conduct and validate calculations using specialized software as necessary.
  • Manage individual task assignments to ensure compliance with project scope, timelines, and budgetary constraints.
  • Ensure all deliverables align with Business Unit protocols and meet relevant design criteria.
  • Follow client and industry standard practices and procedures.
  • Engage with clients to fulfill compliance obligations.
  • Provide mentorship to junior associates.
  • Exhibit strong verbal and written communication skills when interacting with team members and clients.
  • Utilize effective interpersonal skills to foster relationships with colleagues and clients.
  • Assume responsibility for the technical integrity of all deliverables produced or reviewed.

Supervision of junior engineers or technical support staff will be conducted on an as-needed basis and is not a primary responsibility at this level.

A 4-year ABET-accredited degree is required, and the ability to obtain a Professional Engineer license is highly preferred.
