About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Heavy Duty Mechanic to join our team at King County Solid Waste Division. As a Heavy Duty Mechanic, you will be responsible for diagnosing and repairing a variety of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems on heavy-duty vehicles and equipment. You will work on a range of tasks, including inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing vehicles and equipment to ensure they are in good working condition.

Key Responsibilities
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems on heavy-duty vehicles and equipment
  • Inspect and maintain vehicles and equipment to ensure they are in good working condition
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, such as oil changes and tire rotations
  • Use diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot and repair complex systems
  • Work independently and as part of a team to complete tasks and projects
Requirements
  • Four (4) years of experience as a Journey Level Mechanic in heavy-duty diesel, vehicles, and construction equipment
  • Or two (2) years of experience as a Journey Level Mechanic in heavy-duty diesel vehicle and construction equipment or automotive repair and maintenance and completion of a two-year vocational, military, community college diesel automotive mechanics program or an accredited recognized state approved apprenticeship program
  • Basic computer skills required to enter and extract information from an automated maintenance system
  • Commercial Drivers License Class A or B with current Medical Card or ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of mechanical principles of gasoline, diesel hybrid engines, fluid, pneumatic and hydraulic systems
  • Knowledge of current diagnostic techniques and equipment used in industrial, heavy-duty fleet and construction repair operations
  • Knowledge of industrial safety rules, shop safety rules and applicable regulations and procedures that apply to a vehicle repair facility
  • Skill in the operation of electronic diagnostic equipment as well as power hand and air tools utilized in a maintenance repair facility
Working Conditions

This position will be located at the Cedar Hills Landfill and Farwest Maintenance Location. The work schedule will be 40 hours per week, with overtime eligibility. The position may require working alternative work schedules, including evenings and weekends, to support core service hours. The Solid Waste Division is only closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. In this position, you are considered an essential employee and will be expected to work during weather, health, and other emergency events.
