Position: Experienced Engineer - Systems and Acoustics
Job ID:
Type: Full-Time
# of Openings: 10
Category: Engineering
Overview
Engineers within the Ship Signatures Department play a crucial role in ensuring that submarine components, systems, and structures are meticulously designed and constructed to adhere to stringent radiated noise standards.
Functional Areas of Focus:
Structural Acoustics
Engineers in this area conduct comprehensive analyses of submarine structures' dynamic behavior utilizing advanced techniques such as finite element, boundary element, and statistical energy analysis. These analyses leverage cutting-edge computer models operating on a sophisticated network of workstations. Proficiency in finite element or statistical energy analysis, along with a solid understanding of submarine structural design principles, dynamics, and vibrations, is advantageous for candidates.
Systems and Components
Professionals in this domain assess submarine systems and components, developing noise control features to ensure compliance with radiated noise requirements. Acoustic and vibration testing is executed on submarines at various locations, including at sea and in government laboratories, to support system and structural acoustic design initiatives. Continuous collaboration with component and system engineers, as well as Design-Build-Sustain teams, is essential.
Advanced Concepts and Noise Control
Engineers engaged in this group are involved in pioneering research aimed at advancing noise control technologies and acoustic analysis methodologies, alongside developing innovative concepts for noise control in current and future submarine designs. Knowledge in finite element and boundary element analysis, structures, electronic instrumentation, and acoustic theory is vital.
Hydroacoustics and Treatments
This group focuses on predicting and controlling noise produced by hydrodynamic flow, designing and assessing treatment performance, and integrating hull arrays into submarines. Close collaboration with government laboratories is necessary to design, analyze, test, and validate noise control solutions. Additionally, the group is responsible for developing and validating novel numerical modeling methods through finite element analysis.
Acoustic Testing Programs
The Acoustic Testing Programs group is tasked with optimizing acoustic system performance on newly constructed and commissioned submarines. Responsibilities include setting up and executing acoustic tests on fully constructed vessels, data evaluation, diagnostic investigations, and reporting.
Qualifications
Required:
- Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in Engineering, Acoustics, or Data Analysis
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Civil (Structural) Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Acoustics, or Physics
- An active SECRET clearance or the ability to obtain one
- Internal candidates must be from organizations outside of operations
- 6 or more years of Engineering experience
- Master's degree in relevant fields
- Experience or interest in structural engineering, fluid systems engineering, signal processing, testing, and technical report writing
- Coursework or experience in dynamics, acoustics, or vibrations
