Job Summary:

The Tohono O'odham Nation is seeking a skilled Veterinarian to provide clinical and administrative veterinary support to the Nation. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing high-quality veterinary care to domestic animals and livestock, as well as educating the O'odham community on animal health and welfare.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide clinical veterinary care, examination, treatment, surgery, and follow-up for domestic animals and livestock on the Tohono O'odham Nation.

• Educate the O'odham community on the importance of spaying and neutering to control animal populations.

• Participate in and organize semi-annual spay/neuter clinics in cooperation with other animal interest group organizations.

• Review animal care protocols and maintain records of work performed.

• Serve as a member of animal care and use committees.

• Provide consultation and veterinary technology and alternative livestock management instruction to investigators, technical staff, and students.

• Assist in grant management and procurements, mentoring, and the practice of veterinary medicine on large and small animals.

• Lead, guide, and train staff/student employees, interns, and/or volunteers performing related work.

• Provide up-to-date information to the O'odham community on possible foreign animal disease outbreaks and prevention.

• Train staff and students in artificial insemination practice on traditional and alternative livestock breeds.

• Provide emergency and weekend on-call veterinary coverage.

• Supervise, train, evaluate, and coordinate the work of Veterinarian Assistants (Technicians).

Requirements:

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent degree from a school approved or accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), a State department of education, or a State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners.

• Three years of work experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience demonstrating the ability to perform the duties of this position.

• Two years of supervisory experience.

Licenses and Certifications:

• Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.

• May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license, with no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years.

• If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.

• Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English as a condition of employment.
