Role Summary and Qualifications

Nursing Extern

The Nursing Extern provides high-quality, patient-centered care by executing a variety of delegated basic patient care tasks related to standard nursing functions and daily living activities. Under the guidance of a registered nurse (RN), the Nursing Extern supports the nursing staff in delivering patient care aligned with their skills and training, while consistently aiding the patient care team in maintaining a clean, organized, and safe care environment. The Nursing Extern must be currently enrolled and in good standing in an accredited nursing program and can perform advanced procedures once competency is established.

Responsibilities in this role include:

  • Demonstrating the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care for the patient populations served in the department.
  • Communicating relevant information to the appropriate individuals.
  • Delivering compassionate, holistic care while upholding the rights and dignity of all patients.
  • Documenting patient care information accurately in the designated computer systems.
  • Assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs) for assigned patients.

Required qualifications include:

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (must be maintained as per hospital policy).
  • Must be a student currently enrolled in an accredited RN nursing program.
  • Eligible for Nursing Extern position after completing the first nursing semester or being a CNA in the first semester of the RN program.
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training must be completed within 30 days of employment start date.

TriStar Summit is a 200-bed comprehensive facility serving Davidson, Wilson, and surrounding counties. We are equipped with a Level III Trauma Center and offer a wide range of acute care services, including cardiology, oncology, orthopaedics/spine, rehabilitation, and women's services. We are recognized as an Accredited Chest Pain Center with PCI and a Primary Stroke Center, leading in emergency heart and stroke care.
