Job Summary

Key Responsibilities
  • Food Preparation: Prepare high-quality, high-quantity nutritional food following standardized recipes and daily menus.
  • Sanitation and Safety: Adhere to sanitation and safety procedures prescribed for the Head Start kitchens, including proper food temperatures, storage, and preparation guidelines.
  • Meal Planning: Determine quantities of food daily to be prepared for each meal and assist the Food Service Manager in completing relevant USDA/CACFP forms.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance of kitchen and equipment, including weekly deep cleaning and visual safety checks.
  • Customer Service: Maintain an open, friendly, professional relationship with all staff and families, including respect for culture, diversity, and ethnicity.
Requirements
  • Education: Minimum of High school Degree or GED with 1 year of food service experience.
  • Skills: Strong math and clerical/bookkeeping skills, strong computer and keyboarding skills, and thorough knowledge of and experience with bulk food purchasing and large quantity food preparation.
  • Certifications: Valid driver's license, First Aid and CPR certification, and ability to pass a physical examination and Tuberculosis (TB) test every three years.
Working Conditions

The Food Service Assistant will work in an active environment with changes in climate and noise level. The position requires continuous standing and walking for most of a 7.5 hour work day, frequent daily bending and lifting of bulk foods, food bins, and regular crouching, kneeling, and stooping.
