We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Building Code Compliance Specialist to join our team at SAFEbuilt. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with building codes and regulations in our communities.
Key Responsibilities- Respond to public inquiries regarding code cases related to permits and/or licenses, building safety inspections, and explain relevant code requirements and procedures.
- Assemble and gather facts related to applicable ordinances, codes, laws, rules, and regulations, and determine and institute proper action to be taken.
- Respond to and investigate complaints regarding violations of City ordinances; issue notices of violations; stipulate necessary changes for ordinance compliance; take appropriate action to ensure and support voluntary compliance.
- Utilize records verifying compliance of permitting, and required building safety inspection certifications.
- Prepare reports and recommendations on code enforcement matters and gain voluntary compliance.
- Coordinate actions with other departments, jurisdictions, or regulatory agencies.
- Prepare case information, research legal property owner meeting Florida Statute 162, Notice requirements, conduct code case management, collect evidence, articulate written documentation of all violation findings, and present evidence at Code Board or Special Magistrate Hearings and other legal proceedings.
- Explain, interpret, and make presentations to community groups, community organizations, and businesses.
- Maintain records of applications, inspections, investigations, violations, hearings, and related data.
- Perform field assessments and inspections related to the above functions.
- Will be required to perform other related duties as requested, directed, or assigned.
- Ability to recognize deviations from code requirements and from established policies and procedures.
- Ability to meet the public and explain zoning and land use codes concisely, tactfully, and impartially.
- Ability to read and interpret site plans and specifications relating to land use, landscaping, and zoning code provisions.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to deal tactfully but firmly with customers.
- Ability to maintain composure in stressful situations.
- Ability to use personal computers.
- Ability to provide excellent customer service and follow up with customers.
- Graduation from high school or an equivalent recognized certification; supplemented by coursework in code enforcement.
- Two (2) years' experience in code and zoning enforcement work applicable to the area of assignment.
- Or Two (2) years' experience in a related field such as real estate, housing inspector, title research, law enforcement, supervisory, or code or building-related administrative capacity.
- Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License.
- Must possess a Florida Association of Code Enforcement Fundamentals of Code Certification or the ability to obtain a Florida Association of Code Enforcement, Fundamentals of Code within a year of hire date (or when classes become available).
- Must obtain the International Code Council (ICC) Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector Certification within 90 days of hire date.
- Must have a General Contractors License or Building Inspector License.
- Must have a Florida Association of Code Enforcement, Fundamentals of Code Certification (formerly known as Level 1) or above or the ability to obtain a Florida Association of Code Enforcement, Fundamentals of Code within a year of hire date (or when classes become available).
