The Advanced Practice Medical Specialist at Inova exercises independent judgment in the assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of medical processes and procedures, in accordance with licensure regulations and the written Scope of Practice and Protocol.

Utilizing evidence-based standards, guidelines, and protocols for care delivery, the specialist participates in quality and best practice initiatives to continuously improve patient care and enhance outcomes.

Under physician supervision, the specialist performs high-quality clinical practices and effective patient management, adhering to state regulations and following standards for primary and secondary specialty care in clinical and surgical practice settings.

Effective communication with physicians, peers, nursing staff, and other healthcare providers is essential for the specialist's success.

The specialist develops differential diagnoses and plans of care based on data collection, revises them based on physiologic and psychosocial findings, interprets and synthesizes laboratory, imaging, and other pertinent data, and reviews patient plans of care with the interdisciplinary team and with the patient and family.

The specialist evaluates and documents patients' responses to care, assessing the impact of illness on patients' health status, functional status, nutritional status, sleep and rest patterns, family and social relationships, and establishes a health promotion strategy.

Accurate record-keeping is crucial, as evidenced by complete and pertinent history and physicals, pre-operative/progress notes, discharge summaries, and data information sheets.

The specialist serves as a role model and preceptor for new Advanced Practice Providers and students, participating in and supporting departmental, hospital, and system-wide quality performance improvement initiatives.

The specialist participates in clinical research and data collection, assists in projects and planning for continual development of respective specialties, and provides clinical and professional educational programs to improve staff knowledge.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification is required for pediatric specialists.

Licensure requirements include being a Licensed Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner, with new graduates considered.

Education requirements include a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and Master's Degree in Advanced Clinical Practice or a graduate of a post-masters certificate program for nurse practitioners, or a certificate from an education program accredited by the Council of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs/Schools, American College of Nurse Midwives, American Association of Colleges of Nursing, or the National League for Nursing.

For Physician Assistants, a graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program is required.
